I have a group of friends+acquaintances that want to make games and we were supposed to create something over the summer but it never happened (i hate flakey people). I made design documents and concept art but oh well. I'm always pegged into the lead artist or designer roles by friends, so it sucks when i try to depend on people that fall out.
As for what we would be doing, we wanted to focus on learning to use Unity and just make copies of classic games like metroidvania's and simple 3D puzzle platformers for now. I have a lot of lofty "game as an experience, not a game" (i.e. Journey, Abzu, Flower... Matt Nava is basically my game dev idol) type of ideas that are just beyond any of our abilities to make any time soon but i hope to some day. Combined with my friends love for real-time simulation and emergent story/gameplay and we have some amazing original ideas.
Recetly i've really loved comfy experiences in randomly generated worlds like Windward and im hyped for No Mans Sky on friday, so those are interesting inspirations as well.

have you tried tinkering with some of those game maker programs just to see some things in motion? for the smaller games I mean. I've personally not tried making games in anything other than MUGEN which is a good engine for fighting games and beat em ups but that was just with basic wire models to sort of get an idea of using hitboxes and understanding mechanics of those games.

If i could make any kind of game it would probably be an arcade genre like a fighting game or a shoot em up, they've been really big for me for a while or something like an over-the-top horror splatter movie.

I guess its good to keep the concept art, designs and any spritework you make because the idea can always be revisited i suppose maybe with a different team of people or the same group but with an extra hard kick in the pants.

I feel like a lot of people criticize the genre or ones that border it because "its not a real game" which i guess there is a point to be made where the only objective in the game is to play it for the experience, but i've always considered the term "game very loosely.

So, the thing is, i can make a lot of the simpler games on my own already, i know enough programming to script in Unity along with their premade stuff, but i was trying to get my programming friends with CS degrees and coding knowledge to learn the engine so we could make some real games the way i envision them as. If i really worked at it i could probably get over being stupid, properly learn c# and make things on my own, but it's really not what i want to be doing ya know?

The project we were going to work on funny enough was actually a run and gun platformer, kinda like megaman, robot and all. But with a hand-drawn cute art style and animation like skullgirls for example. A couple others were going to do most of the animation and stuff, since i'm much better at cleanup and concept art and designing things. All in all it was me and 5 other people, but my 2 closer friends were the ones that flaked and so the others i didnt really know didn't want to work with me without our mutual friends being involved anymore. So that was my summer.

Ultimately i feel like i can't make an "experience game" with out knowing what it means to make a "real game" and so many people want to >make vidya but never actually do anything and just get a degree to become some monkey for a big corporation. Like, i personally don't see game dev or vidya art being in my career future, its not that interesting to me and i don't want to go to college for it or be employed at some game dev studio... i just want to make fun original ideas with friends and see what happens. Too bad i'm all out of friends who share my passion.

Because in highschool i was fucked over by a girl I fell for who was pretty similar to you and so now I hold an unfair negative stereotype association with anyone like that. Fair enough too, I mean especially if part of the joy is working with the team in itself doing it as an interest and for the fun of it, working solo takes a lot of sacrifice.

Still, on the plus side you didnt get the bad taste in your mouth that making such a thing alongside the release of mighty no 9 may have imparted. Folks seem to be very down on that kind of game at the moment. a real shame though, did you try your hand at any other creative craft through summer?

I think you (folks in general) can make whatever your creativity leads you to i mean it doesnt really have to even meet definition of a game it could just be an experiment in design. Just so you know you could. It will be tough selling it to yourself that its worth the commitment in time but I'd think so. I always like to see people do that kind of thing. The little projects creative minds came up with in-between their big hits.

I wholly agree on the working in industry, the impression that i've got is that it can be pretty horrible the way deadlines work and creative content can be neutered for the publisher to meet their needs.

Yeah i was actually really excited when Mighty No9 was first announced, im glad i never backed it though because of the fiasco. And to be fair the project we were making would have been nowhere near that level of quality or content even, but still reminiscent of the theme is enough to turn people away from it.

I find it hard for myself to motivate to work on random idea projects i have or making some creative thing just for its own sake because of like you said i may get nothing from it and would be a big time and effort sacrifice for myself when im honestly not that good enough yet.

This summer ended up being a total bust because i had dropped so much effort into this project initially that i was depressed and drained of creative ability after it fell apart, so no, nothing was done. As for college thing i feel similar to how you do because i know i like art stuff and thats probably the only thing i could make a career out of if i went to school for it but idk if i could live a life working off that all the time. I want to work on my passion but i dont want my passion to become nothing more than work, but then i cant get the motivation to study some other thing so that my passion can remain a hobby. ¯\_(シ)_/¯
I think you'll have better luck as your interests and what you are studying is much more employable and technical, but it can suck to lump all your effort in to one thing when you like everything, which i can feel ya.
