How exactly is being transgender/gender dysphoria detected in pre-pubescent children? What, in your opinion, is the right approach to treating it at their age?

You don't. Far too many desist. Once puberty starts is when you should go to a specialist, then have the kid go to therapy for a year. That's how you clinically know someone is trans:
>after *beginning* of puberty
>consistent dysphoria; 6 months for adults, 12 for minors

That's an interesting meme you have there.

The study that the article cites as saying that dysphoria intensity helps to show which adolescents persist and which don't actually looked and people who turned out trans and then went back. The abstract didn't say to what degree persistence could be predicted, only that intensity generally correlated with persistence.

Additionally, the citation that of the 80% who desisted, 42% ever met the criteria anyway comes out to nearly half (46.4%) of clinically dysphoric kids desisting.

James Cantor, a notable sexologist, shared this article on his Twitter about the subject (he's in the article as well): http://nymag.com/scienceofus/2016/07/whats-missing-from-the-conversation-about-transgender-kids.html?mid=twitter-share-scienceofus. The article references what's mentioned in the Huffington Post article, and seems to have the opposite findings from the same studies. While 63.3% of kids met the criteria to be diagnosed as trans, the vast majority simply grew up to be LGB adults. Here's a study on the ethical concerns of having kids transition at an early age: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25231780, and here's another one showing how few dysphoric kids actually grow up to be trans: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18194003.

Am I against transitioning as a minor? No. I actually think it's abuse to keep your teen dysphoric throughout the entirety or puberty when transition is known to be the best option. But, being someone who knows what it feels like to be in the wrong body, I don't want cis kids to have that feeling either. So, since the studies find that between roughly half and over 80% of dysphoric kids desist, I don't think transition for pre-pubescents is a good option.

If they can get much more highly accurate results for those kids, such as through DNA tests, brain scans, and other evidence being factored into a diagnosis, I would absolutely get behind early transition. No one should have to suffer with dysphoria.

Nice shitpost.

They screen by asking about home behavior, feelings, and expectations from life. They ask about world view and feelings and emotions..

Before gender rolls are beaten mercilessly into kids they really (like I didn't) don't know the difference between their body and their soul.

I used to wear my mom's earnings because girls were doing it. I never understood even through high school why I was always so fucking depressed.
Kids show signs early of that depression. I was anxiety baked by 3rd grade.

That people care this little about the evidence that most studies shows that most kids desist before puberty, even if they met diagnostic requirements.

Also I thought gender """rolls""" was funny.

The study fails many tests for validity as mentioned in the article. They cooked the data. So the conclusions and numbers in it should be ignored.

The important point is mentioned in the article:
>When Dr. Steensma went back in 2013 and looked at the intensity of dysphoria these children felt as a factor in persistence, it turned out that it was actually a very good predictor of which children would transition.
>In other words, the children who actually met the clinical guidelines for gender dysphoria as children generally ended up as transgender adults. Further research has shown that children who meet the clinical guidelines for gender dysphoria are as consistent in their gender identity as the general population.

>>6700426
If a kid is persistent in expressing their gender is opposite of their sex, then let them grow up as their preferred gender. When you do that you will end up with a much mentally healthier outcome for the child. Trying to force them to be something they aren't will destroy them mentally. That's the shit that lead to my first suicide attempt at 11yo.

It think there's more needed on that. It's a look back on one study, where all the others seem to suggest there's no way of telling. Again, I'd love to make early transition a reality, we just need more information because right now most scientists tend to agree with me.

It would be great to identify all trans people before even they know, and make transition early as possible. That study should be repeated, but with a larger sample size and instead of looking backwards (which could be affected by various biases) they should actually try to predict which kids end up trans. They should add in brain scans and hormonal exposure tests as well.
>>
>>6700426
For prepubescent children, if they say they are trans, take them to a therapist and let them work out their feelings. If they want to wear dresses and be referred to as a girl, let them (visaversa if they are going the other way) Whats the actual harm of letting them socially, non-medically, transition?
As far as hormones go, once puberty starts and they are still sticking with it, give them puberty blockers or actual hormones as needed. Not really that hard.
