Correlation still usually points at some form of causal background. Maybe there is a third factor that leads MTFs to be submissive more than average and submissives to be trans more than average.
Here are two bullshit possibilities I just came up with and in no way actually believe:

Trans people are usually looked down uppon by many people in society. Maybe you're more likely to come to terms with being trans if you are already kinda into being looked down on.

The female role is traditionally associated with submissiveness. Maybe you are more likely to come to terms with being MTF if you are already into being submissive.
