That said swimming is really mostly about the technique so I'd say worry about that before anything. You'll notice swimming will very quickly get less tiring; it's not so much because you're getting in better shape as it is because your stroke is getting more efficient. Learn your flipturns, learn your breakouts, learn to make the most of your stroke, then work on distance and speed imo. That said if you're just looking for a workout go for interval training. I think American pools are 25 yards for the most part so you could just start with 25s on 45 seconds if you wanted, if you try not to breathe the whole time it's not a bad workout and you can always just reduce your interval if it's too easy. A good way to work on turns is to do 50 sprints starting from the middle of the pool, that way you get two turns in on one 50 but the lifeguards might think you look like a bit of a retard
