I haaated middle school. I was always super shy, trying not to look at people. Once we had to play volleyball and they divided the class in half and each half played their own game. I ended up on the woman's side and got a position in the back corner, the way the game was played was wired because everyone was layed out on their side like a grid and you didn't move, you just hit it if it came to you. I zoned out like I always did and the ball came in my direction and hit me right above the groin to where it didn't hit anything but it looked like it did and I didn't react. Some kidlet like 4' tall on the other team made fun of me asking if I felt that and some of the guys on the other team started laughing. Film is also a very different medium, what applies to one thing doesn't apply to another. How do you write an interactive story where the person you're trying to tell the story to has some agency over the actions while still retaining the same degree of pacing and shit that you can have in an entirely scripted sequence of events like a movie, a play or even a book? Just because people haven't figured out how to make it work yet but that doesn't mean it can't be done. Scripts have been around for like millenia and now you gotta break the form surely it's going to take some time.

Another problem is the market forces driving majority of the money into the equivalent of transformers movies.

here are my thoughts on 'video games as art' and i'm going to stop after i post this

there's no definition of what art is; it's become so nebulous in a contemporary setting

personally, and this is me: im interested in the context a work was created in and the intent of the work. does something take into account contemporary thought or attempt to tackle issues in a real way? the games that people often point to as being 'art' are games that try to tell a story with human themes. well, so do all kinds of shitty books and movies, so how are you going about expressing those themes? is it saying anything new or interesting?

it's easy to tell a sad story, but it's much harder to grapple with the complexity of existence in a video game. it's incredibly disingenuous to try to classify particular video games as art just because they evoke emotions in the player. at their core, most of them are just cheap melodramas.

i am very interested in video games as a medium and i have always been a video game fan. i just can't, at this point in time, say that the medium has any real artistic merit.
