I think the problem is that even with the gimmicks (which developers don't have to use) they're selling machines that are basically using last generation hardware. The Wii U is comparable to an Xbox 360 in terms of its capabilities, and it's a pain in the ass to port modern games to a platform like that, especially with the end of mainstream Xbox 360 support.

I sort of like the idea of accepting that you're buying a toy. It has unique things that other's don't have and the hardware works well enough with their intended uses. the wii was a complete success, so there is a market for people who want a toy that works with a tv screen. add the possibility to play it like a regular console if you want and you have a perfect toy.
I liked the idea of the two screens, but it was just too expensive and underutilized to actually work. And without Iwata things don't look great.

I also just kinda feel like we're out of the golden age of gaming. Everything's kinda been shitty ever since ~2014. Imo, the Wii, 360 and PS3 were the driving forces for such great games in the 8 years leading up to modern times, but with Steam hurting them a lot with their absurd sales, I think it kinda killed the market. Now people don't really have a reason to have a console anymore. It's not, "Xbox or PS", it's "Console or PC".
