The idea of tax breaks for marriage is that a couple can form a more simple solid and stable economic unit to contribute and potentially raise children.

Now you could jump on just part of that and say "well if it's just about kids then why let fags get married?!?" but we do not force everyone who gets married to have children, we allow people to marry even if they have no intention of reproducing or are even unable to have kids from health issues, additionally gay people often adopt and care for otherwise unwanted children.
