Really? I much prefer the directors cuts + EoE, I feel thats the ending that he would have done for the show if the funding hadn't been cut. While I want to believe him when he says that was the intended ending, the show isn't just his intentions. Choosing to abuse the budget at points, the changes in the script on the go, the new things that came out of the limitations are more unique than anything you could pre design. That acting with barely thinking gave results much more interesting, for me, than the things he was convinced were correct in the start.

I dunno, after reading the manga Im convinced that without Hideaki Annos vision- NGE is a shallow mecha anime with no depth at all. The mangas lack of resolutions or even themes as far as I can tell along with the simplification of the rebuilds kind of supports this (I blame 3.0 on Sadamoto). Ill take the ending that has a coherent story, is entirely animated, and gives a real resolution to all of the characters. Hideaki Anno tells stories with the authority of a divine being.

the manga was pretty much Sadamoto doing whatever he wanted, I wouldn't consider it as a source of anything (some people prefer it and I'm cool with that, I'm not some Eva puritan). I felt getting a full closure for Shinji beyond what you could tell in a classic narrative was more interesting than the action packed ending.

Sadamoto was a Reifag who didnt understand Asuka at all, and probably thought she was nothing more than a bitchy girl. I assume this is how he felt about Shinji too, hence his character in the manga being entirely different than the anime Shinji. I feel Asuka and Shinji make good leads and compliment eachother well, they're both flawed in similar ways and I want to say mirror eachother. Rei is an outsider in contrast, she's not relatable like the other lead characters and she's not meant to be.
