I don't know if they were coddled by technology, but we were still using paper maps bought in person in my family in 2006 (I was 11). They didn't have the brain studies we have now that vindicate us, social acceptance for everything was lower, religiosity was higher, FFS was probably worse if it existed, I think the drugs were of lower quality, and practices we consider archaic like RLE were cutting edge. When I look at the pasts of the people who had what it took to transition in their 20s decades ago, I just think, "That could never have been me. I don't have what it takes. It's by virtue of the internet that I started at 20, and if I hadn't been as stupid, maybe it would have allowed me to start as young as 12. Otherwise I would probably be a 40 or 50 something transitioner too." It seems they were all show girls and things like that, while I have always been a hermit with few, and sometimes, no friends. Of course, my reclusivity may have also been caused in part by the internet, so maybe I'm underestimating the moxie I might have had. I don't think people should make fun of the less fortunate.
