ive been writing code for about 10 years now since i was 11 or 12. i mostly did things in the realm of security/reversing/systems programming but right now im a fullstack developer at a startup. its not the most fun job in the world but its flexible and i can also go through university at the same time while being paid a alright amount. just have good contacts and have skills + cv and you can get a job.

Trying to design a guitar tuner for a final project but there's so much noise because this microphone is really cheap and there's not much documentation on it so I have to figure out what the fuck it's doing. working on open source projects its always good to build your cv. the reality is that in the end its more important to have projects that youve worked on than what the projects are about specifically. i dont have any solid advice other than to literally just start writing stuff. if you want more experience thats closers to plcs and things of that nature you could try some projects with microcontrollers like arduino etc. fpgas are pretty fun to mess around with as well i wrote a vga controller in verilog for a class and it was cool. i took a fair amount of electrical and computer engineering classes before i switched my major to computer science

if youre going to be dealing with scada systems and plcs i think python and c especially would be great languages to know. obviously electronics knowledge would be useful to have as well.

that sort of stuff isnt my area of expertise though i have worked with a fair amount of microcontrollers and electronics in the past

it definitely depends on the industry and theres definitely a sort of glass ceiling for non engineering degrees in terms of pay. being a tech should help though. i know a fair amount of people who are getting their computer engineering degrees so that they can get that engineering title. its kinda silly even if youre just as competent. if youre over 23 or 24 you should be able to get a lot of money from the government and uni should be basically free if you go to a state school if you wanna go that route.
