This is my very basic understanding of it and I'm not a neurologist, so take it with enough salt to sate your spiro urges.

Our consciousnesses don't interact with the world at all. We don't see light or hear sound with our consciousnesses. Our senses (and there's more than 5), build a model of the world in our brain's circuitry, based on the input they receive. This is not a conscious process.

The consciousness reacts to this model and only this model, but it's not perfect. Our senses don't always update it in real-time, or with accurate information. Now, this is all happening in the wetware circuitry of the brain, and that wiring determines the underlying 'settings' of the model that our consciousnesses access.

So somewhere in that circuitry there's a switch or switches that aren't set to 'normal' relative to the body's starting conditions. Our consciousness looks at the sensory model and the visual etc information doesn't match the circuitry, and BAM, dysphoria.

But there are lots of good looking games that make me want to try playing again, there's a chrono trigger like clone with a supposedly dark adult theme called I am setsuna, I actually liked bloodborne a ton very werewolves meets chuthulu and it plays like a faster better dark souls, and some steam games like Slain and hyper light drifter have my interest
