I've taken only the state required courses for english language. I got into writing by reading, then reading unpublished fiction, then editing good stories in unpublished fiction. There are so many good stories out there that just need relatively minor changes to grammar, spelling, and formatting to be readable. I'm amazed sometimes at the lack of flaws in unpublished works, as far as story goes. So many books have plot holes all over the place, or glaringly obvious literary devices. Depends what you're writing. If it's fantasy, sci-fi or slice of life for young adults, then you have to move the story fast and apply the law of conservation of detail.

If it's something more classical, then you can do everything you want as long as it's well written. I'm reading "In Search of the Lost Time", and so far the first 150 pages have been description and character introduction.

Those 150 pages might be the most beautiful shit I've ever read.

yeah, no my characters change a lot. character development is my favorite meme. i've written out one entire scene where one character is walking out of a city and i describe the walls of a rusted gate and like it's hr griger all over the place because it's a metaphor for the prenatal experience and what i'm saying there is that this character was born from the experiences they had in that setting and now they are leaving it and they aren't as sheltered or as soft as they were before. ;~; really proud of it. dont take my shitposting as an example of my prose. i'm decent.
