Then get one of those dual ended nylon brushes, a copper/brass brush, a bore snake, and one of those nylon picks.
use the brushes to break shit free and then wipe it down with cut up patches of old t-shirt or just some paper towel. use the picks for nooks and crannies. Some designs, usually the ones with a metal slide and metal frame, like a little grease in some places. i use slide glide but YMMV.
TBQH IMHO most people seriously over think gun cleaning.

You need lubricant, a solvent, maybe some nylon bushes and a boresnake/cleaning rod.

Also you should use a food grade grease for slidey bits like the slide and frame rails and a food grade oil for stuff like the locking surfaces or things you cannot access directly like trigger group pins.

You should also get the tools for detail stripping, but they shouldn't be used nearly as often as your cleaning kit. The exact tool set depends on the gun, but generally speaking a punch set, small brass/plastic mallet, and a set of hollow ground screwdrivers will set you up for everything. The hollow ground screwdrivers are particularly important for older guns with slot driven screws. You get better engagement, and you won't tear up the screw so much.
