What could have been done differently in World War 1/The Great War that would have ended the conflict earlier and prevented so many lives from being lost? Specifically, what could have caused one side to succeed over the others much, much earlier, regardless of side.

I study this conflict a lot and it just seemed to me to be at the worst intersection of warfare technology and conscription.

Pic and video related.

If Germany had built a bigger navy, they would have starved the UK into submission instead of the UK starving them.

Also, the Ottomans were severely lacking in having a navy as well. They owned 3 straits, they should have been able to prevent the Dardanelles campaign.

If the Germans managed to close the weak point in their lines at the Battle of the Marne and prevented the British from cutting into them, they *might* have been able to force France into submission and take Paris. Everybody was exhausted at that point, and if the French had lost at the Marne there would have been nothing left for them to do.

if the british had allowed the colonial troops to be under their own command that would have done wonders for the allies. if you do reading about what the australians and the canadians did at the end of the war it was insane. or even better, instead of putting general haig as overall commander, put Monash as commander. monash was a fucking mad man who under stood the war and the germans, two things that haig lacked.

seriously, the commonwealth forces were/are really under rated because of the failures of the british command.

not declare war on Serbia and have them do a full state trial instead

Western Front?
Tank development and combined warfare for the start. Scrap all cavalry instantly. Listening to young commanders, learning from recent wars like the Boer War, and firing every old fart brought up on Napoleonic tactics. No offensives until they KNEW they had a major advantage. Understanding the role of the heavy machine gun, and building good light machine guns and mortars since before the war. Building modern artillery, and perfecting artillery tactics before the war.
Basically, what they did in 1918, except without sacrificing millions of soldiers for nothing in revolt-provoking worthless meatgrinder offensives that gained nothing.

Eastern Front?
DON'T JOIN THE FUCKING WAR, no matter what. Russian Empire has been a powder keg for decades, and with the state of Russian economy and war industry there was no way Russia could fight the war without taking massive casualties and suffering from critical shortages back home, which is exactly what provoked the October 1917 revolution and the Red peril.

From the Triple Alliance perspective?

Don't join the war. Just like in WW2, Germany and all the rest were doomed from the very start, by the very geography, economic weakness, technological and industrial ineptitude, lack of critical resources and import dependencies. For them, it was only a matter of how many more years they could drag the war on and how many more people have to die before their economies collapse, no matter what tactics Entente uses.

if everyone teamed up to kill the all the jews and communists.

maybe one day.

Learn from the American Civil War instead of dismissing it as two colonial yokels getting in a bar fight. The Civil War was the teaser trailer for modern war: huge casualties, machine guns, iron clads, total war. The Yuros were still thinking of Napoleonic set battles.

This. The Siege of Petersburg looked a lot like WWI.

This, too.

Sarin could be produced by 1914s German chemical industry, it makes enemy troops without advanced NBC gear simply melt away.

Not possible. Even if they could afford to match the Royal Navy ship-for-ship (which they could not) then they would both starve the army of funding and the British would simply double their ship-building output to maintain superiority. A big navy for Germany was a "nice to have", for the UK it was absolutely vital.

What caused WW1 in the first place was no nation's government giving an iota of a fuck about it's people and enormous greed for resources nobody yet had the technology to extract from the earth. France didn't want Austria-Hungary to have the rhineland, US wanted to make money selling guns and ammo to the british, Britain wanted to continue being the guys everyone bought everything from instead of Germany, who was industrializing heavily and efficiently. And of course there's the rothschilds, who owned Britian since the battle of Napoleon. So, unless you could convince a bunch of government bureaucrats, jews, war profiteers, and (((royal families))) to all have a conscience, and unless you could turn a bunch of 16 year old idiots into financially secure government-despising wise men who knows war brings death to the many at the profit of a few, the great war was not preventable. The war was engineered to bring death, taxes, and profits. It wasn't a big misunderstanding and mistake like the history books try to make it seem like. Because if it wasn't a big mistake, then that would've meant every nation sent millions of their young men to their deaths to make more money and have more control over their people. And if people figured that out, they might not fight the wars their government called for at all.

>worst intersection of warfare technology and conscription.

A vast number o combatants were volunteers or regular. E.g the boys brigades or the likes of hitler. The continent was creaming itself for blood in 1914.

Pussia was a mistake. Bismark initiate the disaster. The austro-hungarian empires defeat an the unification of Germany was a disaster. The fact that germany is currently unite is a disaster. This always leads to war. It should have been broken back into statelets

What this anon said.
Logistics/Industry was the deciding factor. The Union could produce more, move their goods/troops further and faster than the CSA could and still had manpower to spare. If the Krauts had repaired all rail lines they destroyed on their way through to France, as soon as possible, they might've been able to pull out a win.
>>
>>35191040
Well honestly had the russians had some help pushing just a bit farther in the Brusilov they would have colapsed the austro hungarian fronts
>>
Convince Germany not to go through Belgium, and the British to stay out of the war. The timeline of a swift Central Powers victory would very likely look better than ours
