If your state has a permit to carry, ask that you see it before you sell and record the sale with a Bill of Sale that you'll hold on to so if the gun is ever used in a crime and the ATF eTrace comes back to you, you can say that you sold it in good faith to a person legally able to own a gun.

In my state you don't even need to check their id. If they tell you they are a felon then you can't sell to them, but that's all. They can't convict unless you knowingly sold a firearm to a felon and it has to be on recording/written.
