Quick answer though- Nuclear winter would be a likely result. The only reason to EVER detonate a warhead of that size would be a country on the losing end of a World War that wanted to take the rest of the planet with them.

The only safe way to use a weapon of such power would be to detonate it maybe 50 miles or more above the target.

OP. It would be stupidly powerful. Though uselessly impractical. Look at Tsar Bomba, its ludicrously powerful but at some point you reach diminishing returns. I would rather have 5 10 megaton warheads to use than 1 50 megaton.

After a certain size, the blast of a nuke becomes so large as to become inefficient since half, or more, of the energy will be directed outside of the atmosphere. The Tsar Bomba was 50 megatons, and pretty close to that limit, so 500 megatons would be ridiculously overkill.

This is why the superpowers stopped developing the large bombs and started going with the smaller "city killing" bombs, as you can maximize your effectiveness with the smaller bombs.
