Note that countries with strong naval tradition use feminine pronouns on ships, while the ones with no tradition tend to be mixed bag.

Also , funny fact: Poland, having no proper naval tradition, usually refers to ships as either male or female - it depends on the name.

In 1939 poland navy had 5 destroyers: Wicher, Grom, Błyskawica, Burza and Gryf (well the last one was destroyer/minelayer) . In polish language, Burza and Błyskawica are female names, rest are male. Now guess which two destroyers survived the entire war? Exactly.
