Get 9mm, it's cheaper, easier to handle, can carry more. 40 is a great round, but it is snappy and takes awhile to adjust to it. If you're really crazy you can always get a Glock in .40, get 9mm barrel/extractor/ejector and have it both ways. What I use in USPSA

My first handgun was a glock 22 in 40. It was a good chose, but with that said go shoot both and decide for yourself. I also got a 9 mm, kinda like it more because ammo is cheaper.

9mm is the sound choice, but a .40 gives you the option to switch it over to .357 Sig. So the real question is 9mm or .357 Sig.

I have a Glock 43 (9mm) and Shield (40s&w) and don't really enjoy shooting either of them. But I carry the Shield as it has a safety for pocket carry. In a perfect world I carry a full size Glock but it's just not practical

40 Will be continued to be used by LEOs for its penetration and isn't going away any time soon. It's also common for competition guns because it makes power factor requirements.

As a civilian who will probably be going to prison unless you had a really good reason to magdump on someone through their windshield, the penetration and slightly greater expansion (negligible really) makes it a dumb choice when you can choose 9mm for faster follow up shots, slightly more rounds, and cheaper range time.

You might be able to use 40 for a backpacking gun and load it with flat nose rounds. It would do pretty well though because of that penetration.

Which do you like to shoot more? A lot of recoil is subjective. If you like one better get it.

If you're making a decision based on numbers. Focus on Price per round. 9mm is cheaper and that generally translates into more time shooting.

For subcompacts or basic target shooting you want to stay with the 9mm. 40sw is a good cartridge but choose your pistol carefully, there is a big difference in how many of them behave with 40 over 9mm. If you find a pistol you want that was built for 40 instead of 9mm but just scaled up then it will have recoil that is barely stronger than a 9mm. With that in mind, your options narrow some if you go 40. Trade in 40s are cheaper right now because of faggots like the ones in this thread abandoning their pistols over an fbi report. The ammo is a few cents more.

.40's are going for cheap used and the ammo isn't much more expensive.

Try shooting both if you can. Personally I went with 9mm because of the larger capacity out weighing the slight performance increase of the .40 SW.
