sup /k/

got a problem here with my AK74

it's a Bulgy kit build that I bought from a dude in PA, it's had this problem where shells get stuck in the chamber and are slightly exposed but in there tight.

The extractor seems to pull the shell out but not all the way. The way I clear this malfunction is let the bolt slam home and then rack it back fast and hard, unfortunately slamming the butt on the ground while forcing the bolt back (while it's holding onto the stuck shell) works best. The guy is apparently adept at making Aks, i know he runs a shop in PA. it's on a nodak spud and has a chromelined barrel. this is the only issue I have with it and I cannot figure it out.

it happens a varried amount, maybe once every 6p rounds to once every other round. it's frustrating as fuck any ideas? I sent it back to him for repairs once which he did for free, I just paid for shipping. he said everyone was fine he ran 3 mags through it no problem, just noticed "the handguars were super tight" which pushed the gas block away slightly or something similar, he fixed the issue and it worked pretty well for a min then it came back. what going on, are my handguards too tight and causing this? Any ideas?
>>
>>35129133
Seems like an issue with the receiver, how much did you pay?
>>
Did you try stuffing your dick into the action?
>>
Head space issue. Good ole USA barrel I assume.
>>
Sticky chamber
>>
>>35129500
The lower is a Nodak spud, it's a Bulgy parts kit and all that, it was around $660
What could an issue like that be?

>>35129548
Already tried it

>>35130060
I've heard this before, is this typical of headspacing issues in US barrel Aks? I can't find similar issues anywhere

>>35130153
Sticky chamber? What could cause this?

Take to a real gunsmith.
Do me a favor. Take a 7.62 round, and wrap the bullet with electrical tape. Put the round in the chamber, and take a pictures of the action. With the dust cover off. I'll need a picture of the aftermath of the electrical tape.
>>
*maybe every 60 rounds to every other round

Typo

Op here
>>
>>35131146
How hard is it to remove the spent shell when you motar it? What does your rear trunion look like?
>>
>>35131176
Yea I feel like I'm going to have too

In Commiefornia so unfortunately it might be tough finding a local one

>7.62 with electrical tape
To just see how everything's laid out? It's a 74, I'm not sure where this would help unless that's a meme and I'm just not seeing it

Also unfortunately I don't have any 7.62x39 laying around
>>35131200
After I mortar it it comes out pretty easily every time, in the past before I sent it to the guy who made it to have a look at it there were times where it they wouldn't come out. Now it's pretty easy, stand by for picture
>>
>>35131176
Are US built Aks and headspacing issues a thing with similar issues?
>>
>>35131182
Have you tried any other ammo brands? I realize your choices are somewhat limited for 5.45, but it may be out of spec ammo, or out of spec chamber. I've heard of bad quality us produced ak barrels. But that could be the ole rumor mill
>>
>>35131281
The other anon assumed it was a 7.62
>>
Tight chamber, out of spec ammo and worn extractor spring are possible. It's also possible the rifle is overgassed.
>>
>>35131309
Unfortunately I havnt, i have a spam can but that's for ohshitscenario.jpg

I have tried the other wolf 5.45 tho, similar but a different weight, had similar issues there.

Strange as I went shooting after he sent my AK back and noticed little to no problems, mayne had 1 or 2 malfunctions out of 100-200 rounds? May have just been a fluke and today was bad luck. I honestly feel that something is physically wrong with it. When I got it back from him he said something along the lines of "I didn't find much but noticed your hamdguars were too tight thus something (can't remember what) was getting pushed or pulled and pushing something out of where it should had been." He fixed that and sent it back to me. Told me he shot 3 mags out of it with no issues.
>>35131324
Ah I gotcha, I'll do similar with 5.45 stand by for pictures
>>
Get some gauges check your head space. Worse comes to worse rebuild the rifle.
>>
>>35131440
I don't know why the other anon suggested the electrical tape thing, unless something is hugely glaringly wrong we won't be able to see it with our eyes. Consider too the guy that built it may just be lying. I suggest getting a second informed opinion from someone who really knows aks.
>>
>>35129133
probably a head space issue, this is a very common problem with us made aks and the fuck if we know what it is since no one reports back what was actually wrong when/if they get fix it

could be shitty us barrels not being chambered correct because this shit never happens with bulgy/russian aks. but no shit I've seen atleast 7 aks posted here with the same issue in the past 10 years it's was usually waffen werks aks that did it tho
>>
It's really sounding to me like an out of spec chamber. The handguard thing sounds like nonsense, but even if it was a problem it would cause failure to feed too. Do unfired rounds eject fine every time? Unfired is the key word there

>>35129133
One or two layers of tape around the head spacing surface of a round can give you a cheap no-go gauge.
If one layer doesn't fit you're probably fucked.

Honestly though, just run a case of cheap steel shit through your gun.
The beauty of the AK is that 98% of the time if something's fucked in, chances are the answer is "shoot it a bunch more and check back later"

Oh, post pics of rear trunnion btw.
That will help determine if it's...other things.
>>
>>35131443
Sounds like this is the general consensus
Headspacing issue because it's a US AK barrel

>>35131508
Oh does this check for bad issues with the headspacing, yea I know they sell some gauges I might just buy one of those, or just find an AK guy and send it in

>>35131533
>common issue with American AKs

Really? I havnt seen this issue anywhere I've looks round, headspacing came up a few times but never really let me to believe fully it was headspacing
I might just buy one of those gauges and see if I can read it myself, if not just find a local AK smith who knows his shit and send it in. I'll ask the guy who made it and checked it out when I sent it in about headspacing
>>35131548
Yea I thought the handguard thing sounded fishy too, I thought it possibly made sense on pushing something out of place but it was unclear on what. Unfired rounds seem to eject fine, I havnt noticed any problem with that at all

>>35131660
Ah alright I suppose I'll try that with the electrical tape, I've been shooting this rifle a year or more now and the problem has persisted :/ it been frustrating as the whole >ak crazy reliable meme

Has not really been a thing for mine, I never jams or malfunctions from dirt or anything else it seems but this issue really sucks
>>
>>35131880
When made right they're fine.
Just like with anything, if it is out of spec (generally one way is worse than another) it doesn't always work.

This problem would be caused by a headspace being too tight.
Mine is on the loose side and it works perfectly.
I've had it since 2014 when I built it in my Garage.
It was my first scurry salt raifu and I have beat the ever living shit out of it.

Out of spec chamber. If not a head space issue probably an imperfection going on where you can't see. Seen it on an ar barrel that when was made, the lathe pushed the reamer too hard/fast.

>>35131660
I suppose that's a no brainer

I find it odd that the guy who made it and I sent it back too to look at put 90 rds through it apparently with no issue

He used it in the snow tho, I was in the desert, maybe if it's too tight some dust and sand got in there and would cause the malfunction where as that's not present when he shot it

It happens moreso when it gets dusty, which is still unacceptable, or maybe that's just coincidence. I'm gonna try the round with tape. Am I seeing if it'll fit is all?
>>
Why teh fuck are you guys asking him about the rear trunnion for a stuck shell not extracting?

I think so buddy, they just want lewd pics of your gun with its dust cover off. Buy a set of headspace gauges and check it, might be on the tight side, or borrow some. Maybe your extractor is worn? try replacing it and the extractor spring, it's always a easy and cheap place to start.

The amount of gas pressure can be roughly estimated by observing the rear of the BCG and rear trunnion.
Normally, it lightly bottoms out and smacks the rear trunnion, creating wear (but not peening) on the the BCG and trunnion.

Now, this looks okay for a low round count gun.
Having said that, >>35132150
Anon, your problem is headspace or a shitty extractor.
Try swapping the extractor for a nicer new one.
If that fails, then you need a different barrel to re-headspace.
Thanks fully if you've ever done anything beyond the use of hand tools you probably have most of the shit needed to do this.
>>
>>35132390
Op here

Alright so headspacing issue, being it's too tight

I appreciate the help anon, the extractor seems like the cheaper fix initially and I'll definitely start there

Screenshotted and will try them both systematically

Again appreciate it ak/k/ommandos

Theoretically, any AK could have headspacing îssues. But in all honesty, it's only because of shitty American companies trying to crank out as many guns as possible
>>
The electrical tape thing shows if there are any glaringly bad problems.
The electrical tape should have a ring around it, and the bolt should be completely closed.
If the tape was cut off, the bolt didn't shut, or there's not a ring on the tape, there's a head space problem

Same anon from earlier. Hoping I'm not wasting my time

Are you using 69gr Wolf by any chance? Most my 74's would do this. Including an SGL-31. Would have to beat the rounds out with a cleaning rod/hammer. Just saying it might be the ammo. Stick to 60gr.
>>
>>35133670
It's 60 gr, there's actually a picture of it above. I've used 69 and had thst problem, really that's super strange, wtf would cause that in the ammo? For this instance tho it was 60gr wolf

Nope, no ruptures or deformations as far as I've seen. I havnt really noticed any odd scratches on the casing either, yes heres a picture of one actually. Not a casing from yesterday but same ak, some time ago with same problems

There's possibly an odd dent/scratch top right there, only things I can see that might be odd is that small tiny dent that does go into the shell a little and a small surface scratch above that

I don't notice a ring however there is what looks like a scuff ring slightly outside the primer going all the way around

Some of the excess tape was cut off as well when it went into battery , which seemed to lock into place completely fine

I should probably get some gauging tools and see if I can determine anything, in the mean time a new extractor

Any recommendations on a 74 extractor or where to look for a good/best extractor and spring??

Another low cost idea would be to polish the chamber. If you have access to a drill and some flitz, it wouldn't take much
>>
>>35139786
Desert fox sales got it

Polishing the chamber? I'll look that up and see if it's something I might consider, if it is a headspacing issue I feel I want to be careful on using any tools that might change the spacing down there but I'll look that it before I make a final decision
