I'm a guy who refuses to wear camo when he hunts, so I get it. It's all about wool, wood, and leather. You can also just wear these clothes around in the winter and look way more put together than the degenerates in camo/ sweats or the boring Da Nor Face/ Shilligonia types in their spaceman clothes made out of reused garbage bags

All my hunting gear incidentally was made before 1980.
>Remington 760 Gamemaster (1953)

>Remington 870 Wingmaster (1973)
>Remington 572 Fieldmaster (1979)
>Marlin 336 (1975)

My axes and saws are from the 50s
My knife is a very Early Schrade Old Timer 70-T
My multi-tool is from 1968
My uncle built his and now my climbing stand back in the 70s.

The only things that are new are my clothes, shit im even buying two boxes of .300 savage to hunt with that were made in the 50s.

But i dont use one in the first place
inb4 SAFETY SALLY.

Thing is built like a tank though. My uncle and his friend who is a metal worker built. Ive used quite a few climbing stands and his feels the safest.

My uncle used to sharpen the blades to the point people would complain about what he was doing to the trees.

Hunting magazines (like the kind you pick up only while waiting at the barber or dentist) have made me realize how high tech and untraditional hunting has become
>scent concealing clothes
>camo patterns that rival the military's in effectiveness
>match grade barrels, scopes, ammo, everything
>compound bows tricked out like Far Cry: Blood Dragon weapons
>prefab stands that look like tree and have insulated windows to prevent noise pollution
>endless ads for "the next best thing"
Seriously, what happened to either hiking through the forest with your shotgun or sitting up in a tree stand all day with your grandpa's trusty rifle after tracking the local area and eating sandwiches while sipping coffee or soup out of a thermos? Hunting is about being absorbed by your natural surroundings and making a clean kill when chance comes upon you, and you don't need top of the line gear to do that.

At least the magazines still have cool hunting stories.
>>
>>35129182

>>
>>35132127
You seem like a pretty cool guy.
>>
>>35131946
>Hunting is X
That's your personal definition of hunting, which does seem to vary from what the magazines are selling.

For some (rich or very dedicated) people, it actually IS all about driving your jacked up truck and carrying your match grade tack driving rifle 200 yards to your heated prefab blind and watching TV all day. And then driving your gator out to get the deer and taking it to the butcher after tagging it.

The guys that conduct the kind of hunting you're describing still exist, and tend to get their stories and lore and the like from their hunting buddies and friends moreso than from the magazines.

And it is also worth noting that the magazines are also paid a great deal of money to place all these products. That there is a viable industry that buys them does not necessarily mean there aren't still plenty of folks who aren't super hardcore or super advanced about it out there with well worn Remington 700s and home made tree stands.

>>
>>35132293
I'll back you up, to an extent.

To each his own, but it's not like we're fucking hunting for survival. It's a recreational activity for 95% of those who do it, and I personally see all the high-tech shit as an unappealing fast-track to "success."

I think the experience is more substantial these days than just bagging & tagging game.

Costco actually has surprisingly good quality meats. They have surprisingly good quality food in general. Most of their products are equal to a good corner store, and their prices tend to be better too.

If you don't love all your guns equally, you shouldn't own them.
I know a guy who brings two gun cases to hunt moose - rifles in 8x68S, 8x57 IS, .308, .30-06, 9.3x62, 6.5x55 and .45-70. Yet, while he's bringing such a formidable arsenal plus enough booze to kill an elephant twice over, he has never had more than one tag and never spent more than three days taking it.

Reduction to absurdity is a debate TACTIC, not a logical fallacy.
>>
>>35132293
In logic, reductio ad absurdum (Latin for "reduction to absurdity"; or argumentum ad absurdum, "argument to absurdity") is a form of argument which attempts either to disprove a statement by showing it inevitably leads to a ridiculous, absurd, or impractical conclusion, or to prove one by showing that if it were not true, the result would be absurd or impossible.

Hunting hasn't become untraditional, the world has.

The areas you get to hunt now are way smaller than the ones of the past. The ones that you can hunt have PETA fags and neighbors harrasing hunters. It's illegal to stalk deer in some states, and it costs me $150 for an out of state base license with an extra $25 for a tag. I'm not paying that much and going home hungry, so I don't leave anything to chance.

I still hunt with my grandpa's 1969 stock 870 Wingmaster with 00 buckshot and a full choke, I made my own ghillie suit for turkey, but you'd be downright stupid in todays hunting world to not use any scent control.

You can probably expect 2MOA at bare minimum, if you're equal to the task. Pretty sure the No.4 Mk.I left the factory capable of 1.5MOA at least (of course that would have been 70+ years ago before decades of use) and the No.4 Mk.2 I'm pretty sure left the factory capable of 1MOA at least. One of the criticisms of the Mk.III* was its accuracy, which was roughly comparable to the later M1 Rifle. Minimum of 3MOA from the factory if memory serves which isn't terribly bad for a front-line rifle.15" group at 500m? Pretty much all anyone will ever need I think in terms of standard infantryman with iron sights.

Thick-as-fuck barrel, free-floating, long-radius aperture sights, all of which are qualities that the Kar98k, M91/30, M1903A1, Type 38, Mannlicher-Carcano, and Mk.III* Lee Enfield lack. The No.4 Lee Enfield may very well have been the most accurate standard-issue rifle of WWII and the Korean War.

>does camo actually matter in hunting

It depends on what you're hunting, where you are, and how you're hunting it.

Some animals, like turkeys depend much more on sight, while most mammals are much more scent oriented. Animals in heavily hunted areas will be much more cautious, as will older animals. You might not need to wear camo for hunting from a stand/blind, but probably will if you're stalking game on foot. Terrain matters a lot as well, it can be harder to spot or sneak up on game without the benefit of elevation.

I got within 100 feet of a deer at a park the other day wearing street clothes, standing upwind of it. But the deer was young, it had no experience with being hunted by humans and I was able to use terrain to my advantage.

OP for the FR-8 post here.

While I'm certainly no expert its my understanding that the FR-8 can withstand 308 just fine because they're made from big ring Mausers, but the FR-7, made from small ring Mausers, is more fragile and cannot withatand modern ammo.

Besides that it's a drawing, but if it was a picture I imagine it would be deliberately posed. Of course people took pictures like that in a different era, a non-digital one to be precise. I imagine that when some retard like you stumbled over to the bar to declare "ACKTUALLY..." in the middle of a hard working man's happy retelling of his hunting trip, most of the patrons would probably be sick of your shit by that point.

So with all the calm grace a drunken, furious mob could be expected to muster, they hold your down and take turns savagely beating you with a table leg until you pissed yourself.

A sight tool? you want to replace the (if I recall correctly) 300/600m flip sights for a more finely adjustable ladder sight? If you want I suppose, but those rare two-position sights are what were primarily used during WWII. You may very well have a stock-standard No.4 Mk.I there. I've owned a No.4 Mk.I/2 which is a Mk.I that was refurbished to Mk.2 specs, and its rear sight was replaced by the superior ladder sight. That said, if I had the standard two-position sights, I think I'd stick with it. Within 300m, aim a little low or even just set the front sight low in that rear aperture when shooting.

No, for the front sight. I don't mind the minimalist rear sight.

So why are you dressed for a wedding when you hunt? Or are you just on break from your executive job at Sears Roebuck. How's your vacation in Switzerland, I trust the Roe Deer hunting has been treating you well?
