How bad of an idea is this /k/? I have 5 guns, but no submachine gun style guns.

first off, NFA or not?

If NFA, bank account decides.
If not, then let us consider what manufacturer.
Tell us, OP.
Which brand made the semi auto uzi you are considering?

If I ever win the lotto I'm getting a 9mm F/A with both the folding stock and a wood full stock.

I shot a F/A one in Georgia and let me just say after 2 mag dumps the black bulls-eye was completely gone and only the white outer paper remained.

Most fun gun experience of my life.

The nature of it being semi auto closed bolt adds a few idiosyncrasies that were not present on the orginial open bolt design.
Basically because the bolt isn't connected to the non repriocating charging handle, you have no means of a forwards assist.
With the Model A type uzi the semi auto bolt is not cut for the out of battery safety. This that if you have a double feed and your bolt has already picked up another round and has it on the breech face you'll have an OOB.

Beyond that it's a really fun piece of history and may serve you well as a PCC or whatever you wish to do with it, but be aware of the shortcomings that have arisen from the semiauto closed bolt conversion.
>>
>>35122750
No forward assist isn't really that big of a deal.

The model A style semi bolt is a safety issue, but from what I understand model B style bolts, like the McKay bolts are safe.
>>
If it's just to have a cool gun and money isn't really a thing then yeah. Hell I'd go all out and get a B&T unless the reason you want it is that it's an Uzi. Nothing wrong it that.

If not then I'd say no and go for a pistol AR. Pistol caliber or not it's up to you.

Either route I took I'd sbr it.

Don't you still need to modify some of the internals/buy a new bolt assembly and buy a brand new trigger pack?
>>
>>35123339
Basically you need a semi-auto bolt, barrel, and a tab welded in the trigger pack. SA receivers have a different feed ramp, and a bolt blocking bar.

>>35123275
Hence this is sketchy as fuck, and almost certainly the ATF/CA DOJ
>>
>>35123362
So if I were to buy one of those McKay receivers and a complete Uzi demilled kit with everything what parts and tools would I need in addition to complete it
>>
>>35122063
If you buy one I'll call the ATF on you myself. Stop over-compensating for your short dick.
>>
>>35123370
You'd need to weld a tab in the grip stick/buy a semi-auto one, a semi-auto bolt, and a semi-auto barrel.
>>
>>35123392
>The McKay receivers claim to be "fully welded" does this mean I don't need to do any welding?
>Whats the difference between a semi and full barrel or are you just referring to the fact that most parts kits some with chopped up barrels?
>>
>>35123400
Semi barrel has a narrow diameter toward the breach, so it works with a semi-auto style feed ramp (welded to the receiver). Semi feed ramps are actually kind of nice, since they'll feed loads bedsides ball much better.
>>
>>35123416
Well my dream of building a cheap Uzi went out the window when I saw how much people are jewing semi auto bolts for

It's really easy, OP. You'll save quite a bit of money too, this cost me $530 total.
>>
>>35127055
Not OP, but list of parts and where you got them from?
>>
>>35127055
You machine the bolt into a closed bolt design or something?

I've heard they're made from particularly hard steel
>>
>>35126988
Open-bolt is a legal grey area in U.S. firearms law. In 1982 ATF started to declare a bunch of different open-bolt semi-autos as machine guns. So manufacturers stopped making them cause they figured that their guns would be declared machine guns.

But there's no explicit ban on open-bolt semi-automatics, each design is up to ATF interpretation.
>>
>>35127098
No. closed bolts are readily available.
>>
>>35127110
So... Could I legally build an open bolt gun?
>>
>>35127055
No can do because I live in Washington and you can't have parts kits shipped here because they have machine gun parts.
>>
>>35127136
Possibly. Like I said, you'd have to submit it to ATF and see what they say. Only a handful of open-bolt semi-automatics are declared machine guns.
>>
>>35127055
You got a guide and parts list for this? What type of equipment and tools do I need access to?
>>

>>35127150

This is a great idea. I too loved the Uzi. They are indeed heavy as fuck for what they are but unbelievably fun. I would say they're even easier than building an AR with an 80% lower. Really really easy. And super loose tolerances. It's the SMG of AK's.

It will have to be Semi-Auto though. I highly recommend a Semi-Auto McKay bolt & firing pin on a McKay SA receiver. Takes all the hassle out of the build.

>>35122305

They're good. As with most Norinco's (except their AK's), you'll find a few jagged corners and things maybe not PERFECT. But they function just fine. It's an Uzi.

>>35122341

This. Swapping caliber as easy as swapping your bolt & barrel, OP.

>>35122750

I've never specifically had that problem but yes, you will have a very very occasional jam (I've had maybe 5-6 odd jams out of the 8K rounds I've put through mine). But all of mine were due to my magazines. Maybe I'll have an OOB one day.

Also, nice Title II fauxcan. I love mine.

>>35122965
>>35122954

This. Buy a fully welded from McKay. It costs the same as having to bend your flat and it comes welded.

>>35123339

Everything is done and welded except for welding a very small "blocking bar" in your trigger guard. It's literally a single tack weld with a scrap piece of metal; then dremeling it flush. Takes less than 5 minutes. 10 if you're a perfectionist.

Also, you have to take a small spring/rachet out of the top cover so it's no longer an open bolt. This is just unscrewing the bolt handle, taking it out and screwing it all back on. Takes a minute.

>>35123244

No it isn't.

>>35123400

That's correct. The only weld you will have to do is a small tack weld inside the trigger group for the blocking bar. But silver solder will work as well.

>pic related in the next post

They also sell semi auto groups so you don't have to weld but I wanted mine to have all the FA Hebrew on it. Looks cool.
I'll answer more questions and write a parts list, hang on.
>>
>>35127191
Well only the KG-9, M10/11 pistols, and Sten carbines are explicitely machine guns according to the ATF. The ATF never ruled wether an UZI carbine that fired from an open-bolt is a machine gun or not?

You *can* machine the FA bolt but it's a bitch. The only difference is a slot in the SA bolt to fit into the SA receiver and a hole for your firing pin assembly since it is no longer an open bolt/fixed pin design.

I've already said that.
>>

The only open bolt guns that are legal are single shot. I saw one guy who build a Cz.26 that was single shot and he got it approved by the ATF. I don't recommend it though. Especially with an Uzi.

>>35127142

You can still buy the top cover pre-modified for SA only and a SA trigger group/stick. These aren't machine gun parts so you should be good. I'll see if I can find you some links.

>>35127161

I'll post a parts list and the videos/guides I used in the next post.

Only tools I used were a cheapo dremel from Amazon and a friend's welder for the tiny tackweld that took a second to do.

>>35127191

No, I'd say the Uzi and MAC are the easiest ones to do; mostly because SA parts are a far more available.
Okay. Parts list & tutorial vidyas coming up next.
Also,

>>35127235

See that slot in the bar? That only fits SA receivers which have the bar which fits in that slot as seen here:

>>35127289
It's a matter of machining it out and then machining out a very small hole for your firing pin. There's also a video of how to do this on YouTube but I don't recommend this method. It's very hard and will require a whole lot more $$$.

Then you won't have to do any welding that's required.

The only welding you'll need is if you have a full-auto grip stick. You have to weld a tab to keep the selector from going into the full-auto position.

Okay, I'm back.

Here is a parts list. I know that some of these are "sold out". This is just to show you what you might need. The McKay bolt/firing pin assembly have been sold out for a long time and I bought mine off Gunbroker for just $250 together. Look around everywhere, there are many websites that carry them. This is just a list and links so you can see what you'll want.

>McKay SA receiver; $239.00

http://www.mckay-ent.com/uzi-semi-auto-receiver-shell-126.html

***IF YOU ARE GOOD AT WELDING; BUY THIS INSTEAD FOR $99. You will have to only weld in the bolt blocking bar and the trunion, it's very easy to do: http://www.mckay-ent.com/uzi/uzi-semi-auto-receiver-shell.html**

>McKay Bolt/Firing Pin $279 but can be found for $150-200; look around

This is the hardest part to find and typically the most expensive. You can find it WAY cheaper on other websites and on Gunbroker/Armslist like I did (I got the receiver/bolt for $250 and just had to buy the parts kit, barrel, Allumahyde II, etc etc etc).

http://www.mckay-ent.com/uzi/uzi-semi-auto-bolt-assembly.html

http://www.mckay-ent.com/uzi/uzi-16-barrel.html

>McKay 16" barrel - $109

http://www.mckay-ent.com/uzi/uzi-16-barrel.html

These are great; if you want a fancy chrome lined one, Green Mountain has them for $150. You can also have the regular 10 inch barrel, but you wont get to use the cool wood or folding stock since anything with a barrel that short + a stock is an SBR.

>Uzi Parts kit - $179 regular but $100-120 on sale

https://www.apexgunparts.com/uzi-parts-kit-w-collapsible-steel-stock-type-2-demil-israeli-military-industries-good-to-very-good.html

Wood stock

https://www.apexgunparts.com/uzi-parts-kit-w-wooden-fixed-stock-type-2-demil-israeli-military-industries-good-to-very-good.html

ONLY buy these on sale. I swear, they're on sale once a month.
That's it. You can buy a sling, extra mags, etc but you should be able to Google those.

Coming next is the tutorials I used.
>>
I've heard a good welding technique for welding sheetmetal guns like this is using a tig welder to do a bunch of overlapping tack welds. Seems like the main concern is avoiding warping the receiver.

>MadMetalManiac74's Uzi Build

This guy is hilarious and has a great series. COULD go in depth a little more but it's the best set of videos I've found for visualizing what you have to do.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1DIa2C0DQs

This video by him is absolutely vital for learning to assemble your trigger group for the first time and seeing how to tack weld your grip stick:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2LM600Tmoc
>The Redneck Engineer's Uzi build:

I didn't use this one much but it's good. I used his written guide a whole lot more:

http://theredneckengineer.blogspot.com/search/label/Uzi

And finally, here's the guide I used the most:

Give it a browse, it'll show you what you'll be doing.
Feel free to ask more questions. In the future if you go through with this build, ask your questions in the Gun Building/Gunsmithing thread. I always check those to help people with their Uzi's; call me "Uzibro".

I don't trip though, I'm not faggot.
>>
>>35127453

I was scared about the same but used a stick welder on the grip stick. Because you're only doing a tack weld, you should be fine. Mine was.
Also, one more guide:

http://myuzibuild.weebly.com/build-blog
>>
>>35127055
whoa that is an amazing price, how much would it cost to pay someone to build it?
>>
>>35127640

WAY more than it should be.

I'm telling you -- you have to build it yourself. It is unbelievably easy. It was my very first gun build when I built it and I had no idea what I was getting into.

If it's that intimidating, I would be willing to provide you with a temporary Skype and we could sit down and I'd be willing to take mine apart and rebuild it with you. But I'm telling you, it's cake.

Here's a quick rundown:

>Tack weld trigger group & reassemble unless you bought a semi-auto stick.

>Paint parts with spray on Brownell's Allumahyde II

>Wait a week

>Install rear sight (use a video, takes a few minutes)

>Insert trigger group into receiver and put your pin through it.

>Screw on stock; it only goes on one way

>Put spring and firing pin assembly into receiver with bolt

>Slap on top cover

>Insert barrel and screw on barrel nut
You're done. Once you do it a few times, you can assemble and reassemble in 3 minutes.

Here's a breakdown so you can see just how few parts there are:

ARVN Gooks and SF loved it in urban areas. Just not how 9mm handled in the jungle.

Uzi's make a fine accessory.

Speaking of women with Uzi's, it's my wife and mother's favorite gun to shoot. Just because 9mm is enough to fuck shit up and due to the gun's weight (it weights 9 lbs), it has the recoil of a 10/22, lol.

That and there's plenty of boo-lets. I get lusty when my wife puts the stock under her arm and she hip fires on our range.

What ever happened with that 9 year old who shot the range instructor with an Mini Uzi? We never got a full tape. I remember a lot of people on /k/ & /pol/ saying it was fake and perpetuated to implement a little more gun control.

Video:

The reasoning was:

>All of the wind with clear voices

>Weird empty range in desert

>Uzi recoil does not handle like that and go "up" like a traditional SMG; because it's open bolt with a VERY heavy bolt -- the recoil actually goes forward and keeps the gun horizontal. This gives the Uzi (and it's weight) it's easiness to control.

Watch the 5 minute mark to see what I mean:

I'm getting tempted to do this. I'd like an SBR uzi because they look cooler, but not sure if it's worth the extra $200.

I heard some shit that 9mm out of a 16 inch barrel holds the same ballistics as .357 Magnum from a handgun. It's also quite a bit more quiet. With regular rounds, you barely hear a crack -- mostly the "WOOSH" of the bullet. Not entirely sure if that's true or just Fudd lore posted on /k/.

With subsonic rounds, I had three people thinking my faux suppressor was real.

It does look cooler to SBR it but I didn't want to deal with the ATF/wait 11 months, etc. So I bought a $50 fake can from Title II Arms and put it on. It's actually amazing for keeping yourself from burning yourself on the barrel.
