training.

Some common rifle in a common caliber that is in your price range.
>>35120891
Ruger 10/22

i saw a savage axis at walmart in 30-06 would that be good?

A lot of people will recommend a rifle in .22lr
https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/2084_36_62_975/products_id/24445
I found one of these at walmart for $150. 22lr, bolt action, the one i got came with a 10 round magazine. There are a lot of people who get really enthusiastic about a new hobby, go all in, and because they don't know what they're doing they end up spending a fuck ton of money and gaining little but disappointment. Start with something small and simple and work your way up.

Decent. It'll beat up your shoulder a bit until you get used to it though.
>>35120930
Sure, plus it can also double as a hunting rifle. .30-06 is a bit expensive, but you can shoot far with it.
>>35120891
Just get an inexpensive ar. All Americans should be required to have at least have one
>>35120926
This or the Ruger Mark IV pistol.
.22s are cheap and easy to shoot.
Get yourself a .22 for target shooting and small game and a cheap pump shotgun like a Maverick 88 12 gauge for SHTF.

yeah i've been thinking about a mossberg 500 or some cheap milsurp like a mosin
Just get a ar-15 if you don't plan on hunting, cheap as dirt right now, ammo is cheap, no recoil and you can pimp it out later with rails and lights and flashy stuff to make it heavier.

Milsurp is a mediocre choice for a first gun, most of it isn't cheap anymore and the things you CAN get for cheap still have ammo that's climbing in price, all for guns that are objectively not the best in most instances.
Milsurp is for collectors, shooters have better, cheaper options.

mosins were cool when you could get a rifle and 1000 rounds for under 200$ now unless you are really into the history they are way outmatched by modern bolt actions
>>35121029
ahh i see good point.
>>35120930
.308 Winchester would be better and cheaper
>>35121044
This also 223/556 even cheaper if you don't want to hunt
>>35121044
ironically enough i think saw one there in.308 with a wood stock instead of polymer if that makes much difference.
>>35121058
1 dollar a trigger pull adds up quick
>>35121074
It's 99% aesthetics. If you like the look of wood go for it, if you don't then get whatever is cheaper, which will usually be polymer.

Buy a mauser
