Service rifles beings replaced right now (ostensibly by HK) were adopted 30-40 years ago. No Cold War to justify spending, so countries are just waiting for the rifles to get so busted (and the companies making them to not exist anymore), before they get the replacements.

And here is a few nice things I could say about it:
- it's an obsolete design that lacks fancy bells and whistles but was fine at the time
- it's iconic and has history
- it's lefty friendly
- it's compact, lightweight and the stock sling is alright, it's a lot better to carry around on patrol or guard duty than an old clunky SPAS-15
- it's easy to take apart and clean compared to older designs like the AA-52
- it's good enough that anyone can be trained to shoot half decent groups at 300m

you can do "SATS" though pretty trivially easily tho and its basically a bunch of C7s rigged to use CO2 lines and lasers instead of boolits so you can effectively use it in a glorified Time Crisis machine

most of the programs for it are just shooting low res targets but some of them are FMV games and it interfaces with vehicle simulators so you can pop very blocky floppies from a jeep inna very poorly textured woods

The military isn't a place where you're going to have fun, especially with firearms, since shooting guns is actually the thing you'll spend the less time on in the military.
Being a soldier is basically being a glorified janitor. There is no budget to give you actual training everyday, and there is no point and no one cares about it anyway. So your officers have to find a way to occupy your time. That's why you spend 90% of your time cleaning your room, your uniform, your shoes and shaving. That's why those retards keep wearing white gloves and touch the windows and the top of furnitures to see if there is a single speck of dust, and then make you clean your room all over again. That's why you shoot ten rounds a month then spend the rest of the day cleaning the gun over and over again. Cleaning the gun so much actually damages it, guns in the military are completely worn up, but usually not by shooting, since they don't get shot very much, but by over cleaning.

Tl;dr : the military is a retarded institution for retards making you do retarded things. Don't go there expecting to shoot guns as anything but a small aside.
