I have a 3.5 inch 870 with a 28inch barrel I've had for years and been super happy with it.

That being said I'm after an over/under, money isn't an issue but hoping to keep it under $1000

Good luck. I'm not too versed on o/u and I generally shoot sporting clays not trap, but trap specific o/u's generally run in the multiple thousand $ range.

I use my Vepr 12 for sporting clays.
Maybe look into something not o/u or trap specific?
Those things are ridiculously high priced and even "lower" tier ones are still well over a grand.
There's plenty of guys using Mossberg 930s and Berettas to shoot trap.
Even a good ol' Auto 5 will be less than most o/u, and will shoot trap fine.
Remington 1100s are another good trap semi.
Benelli is another great name in trap/clays.

It really depends. A lot of traps tend to be less muscular, so you may want to buy something in 20ga, but if you don't mind having your trap do some training they shouldn't have too much of an issue with 12ga.

An 870 really should be fine, and you already own one as you said here >>35086194 but eventually you'll want to upgrade. You probably could get a mid-grade Browning or Winchester used for under $2000 if you shop around or look at postings if the range you go to has a bulletin board.
