As an 0311 2006-2010 I got lucky and deployed once to Iraq, once to Afghanistan. But guess what, we still had to do MEUs even when shit was still happening. Peshmerga - the army of the kurds in Iraq. Only accepts Iraqi kurds and a few non-Iraqi kurds. They might reconsider if you are a specialist they are real short on. But most of the forces are really local protection divisions based on volunteers, and have limited resources and training even if they are the best motivated forces in Iraq. The current situation is that they can hold their own against the Iraqi government if need be, but the biggest threat is Turkey who can barely wait to go get a slice of kurdishIraqi oil cake. That would get vicious and, oh, the Turks are NATO. They are a large country with a considerable military industry. All the Peshmerga has is caves and guts. And oil they can buy weapons for. Kurds have lots of friends, on paper. Including USA and Russia.

YPG and YPJ - Syrian kurd militia which is also based on volunteers, but these guys also accept foreigners. Provided they are more or less okay with the flavor of socialism the Y's have embraced. YPG have proven to be very skilled in combat, marketing and politics. They are big on enlisting women (in the all-woman YPJ) and have taken in maybe a couple of hundred foreigners, which they are smart to utilize for marketing their cause to the world but also smart to keep away from the real combat.

SDF: Syrian militia, with maybe 90% YPG and a nice 10% of local arab tribes. SDF has been trained by western countries and have done very well in combat. They are walking on eggshells not to get into real fighting with Assad as they hope for a peace where the kurds are allowed to stay free within Assad borders. But there are lots of other militias contending for Syria now and Turkey is still the big threat, even bigger than in Iraq, because Syria is personal for Erdugan.

My impression is that noone want more foreigners in their hair in Syria or Iraq right now. If you already speak a kurd language and have combat experience they would probably be interested anyway.That could however change at any moment.

All the kurdish forces I am aware of have been short on medical staff. A couple of years there were practically none. The foreign support they have been handed have been focusing heavily on combat. If you have medical skills, are in reaonably good shape maybe and some military experience I suspect that you will be accepted with open arms. Last I checked they have a website where you can make contact.

Keep in mind the rules of this war. Your own country can in theory accuse you of treason, but most western countries are cool with it provided you have not been involved in any kind of war crime or worked with the bad guys. ISIS are the big bad guys but there are other groups who are little better so choose with care. YPG have done well in that regard so far.

What we know about foreigners enlisting with YPG:
- you will pay your own plane ticket
- paychecks are barely enough to keep you with snack
- food is meager for all soldiers. Expect to get lean or bring money for extra food.
- decide beforehand how much attention you want. EVERY journalist in your own country will be begging for interviews. Taking photos.
- ISIS read the news in your country. Let one pic be taken and you will be on their to-get lists.
- field conditions are rotten. You will have a blanket and sleep in concrete rubble, with no guarantee of hot water for washing.
- whatever you do, don't transfer via Turkey. It's open season on your kind in the border cities.

First you need a solid death wish. The regular SAA would not dream of allowing a foreigner to join. The militias on the Assad side follow no rules nor laws and sees foreigners as goods to trade off.
