I had a thought today - planes have been flying supersonic since WW2, right? How do radios work when planes fly faster than sound? The person on the ground might hear a delay, but how does the radio sound from the ground transceiver reach the plane that's flying faster than the sound?

I'm guessing this is why civilian jetliners all fly subsonic these days?
>>
>>35066691
Radio waves travel near the speed of light.
>>
No one can be this stupid. You got me. 10/10 bait.
>>
>>35066698
yeah, I know that's how TV works because the radio wave is carrying light, but how about the sound on the wave? How does the sound travel at the speed of light?
>>
>>35066691
....dunno if I'm replying to bait or a serious question.

Anon radio doesn't transmit the fucking sound (that's why you don't ambiently hear radio as you walk around), rather they transmit at certain frequencies which pass through the area at the speed of light, not the speed of sound.
>>
>>35066704
Anon, a radio wave is not sound waves. Go read rule 2, stop posting and go back to school.
>>
>>35066704
>radio wave is carrying light
Alright boys pack it up, we've legitimately got a retarded one.
>>
>>35066704
The sound doesn't exist on the waves, it's transcoded and sent out in a wave so that personal or crew radios can absorb the wave and uncode it into audio waves once more.
>>
>>35066727
but you do? isn't that what happens when you turn on a TV and you hear that super high pitched buzzing - that's the radio transmission from the TV, right?

>>35066739
so you're saying you can turn light into sound and sound into light? this seems sort of counterintuitive - why would we need both ears and eyes if they're actually the same thing?

Not all photons are visible, they can appear all across the spectrum (not that one), deviating far from standard light.

That was almost a good troll, but you gave it away with the "getting brighter in a dark room" comment. That might fly on /b/, but I'd wager /k/ has a decent handle on the electromagnetic spectrum.

OP might be an exception, but I'm going to bet on him trolling too. Given that, I wonder whether /sci/ would react more or less.

They just throw the messages faster when they fly. Basics, really.

The buzzing is from a flyback transformer turning the 120v mains into a high voltage for the electron gun.

In all reality how does a radio work at supersonic speeds? wouldnt the sound be behind the pilot by the time he speaks?

The air inside the cockpit is also moving at supersonic speeds.

Stand on a train and throw a ball in the direction of travel. Does the ball go forwards or come flying back in your face?

That should answer your question about the voice being behind him. As for radio, the speed of sound is completely irrelevant to radio waves. Lets look at radar to help you understand.
Radar emits radio waves which bounces off of the object and then gets returned. If this where sound wouldnt the ambient sound of the world drown out the waves? Or how about radio communication into space. Wouldnt radio not work if it was sound since sound requires a medium to move through?

The reason this happens is because RADIO HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FUCKING SOUND! THE SOUND YOU HEAR ARE THE IMPULSES TO THE FUCKING SPEAKERS WHICH VIBRATE THE AIR MAKING THE FUCKING SOUND!
>>
>>35067711
wouldnt it hurt the pilot if it was moving that fast
>>
So can I shine a flashlight on my truck antennae to make music? If not, how many flashlights will I need?
>>
>>35068497
I genuinely cant tell if this is bait or ignorance. The pilot is moving at supersonic speeds too.
>>
>>35068543
This would boil down to the frequency of the wave. In theory i guess you could figure out a way, but you would need to tune your radio to the very frequency of the light youre using. I could be completely off in this but i think it might just be a matter of proper tuning.

You want to hear something neat? Turn your radio up and roll your windows down and pull your antenna way back and let it go. The wa wa effect is so cool. Tune a classic rock station and do it when the play Led Zepplin's Kashmir. You'll freak.
>>
Probably just someone with a misconception, don't be too hard on him.

The thing is that although the radio waves are transmitting sound DATA, they are sent and received in the form of radio waves, which travel at near the speed of light. Once that data is received, it is converted into sounds that our ears recognize as voices etc.
>>
>>35068675
you're an idiot, nothing can travel at the speed of light.
>>
>>35068690
You're a retard
>>
>>35068704
prove me wrong. the speed of light is the ultimate cosmic speed limit, nothing that can transfer information can travel at it's speed or faster.

>>
>>35068714
lol, as if any human technology can accelerate anything to the speed of light, that would take too much energy
>>
>>35068713
Radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation. As is light. Another thing to include in the cosmic speed limit is that its based on our current understanding of physics. The same understanding that says the universe shouldnt be speeding up. Also, this seems a little to science-y for /k/

>>
>>35068747
that's a popular misconception
>>
>>35068761
Here's an extra (you) for the road
>>
>>35068747
Bruh, actual physicists call it the cosmological constant.

Electrons simply happen to travel at the maximum speed if they're in a vacuum.

It effects all matter, energy, and information.
>>
>>35068768
I am an actual physicist, and it is called the speed of light.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_light
>>
>>35068738
I cant even understand what that means. Does that mean that light carries with it some form of communication? Does this mean the whole universe is sentient?

No. No it doesnt. Because light doesnt carry information. Light is a form of radiation, which means its a form of energy. This energy is then taken up by plants and converted into sugars. These sugars feed the plants. These plants in turn feed the herbivores, which feed the carnivores. If light carried information not only would it up end physics, but biology and chemistry.

But im seriously hoping that you already knew all this and you arent just spouting shit in an attempt to get an angry response.
>>
>>35068778
it's actually the speed of a massless particle in a field

>>35068781
of course light carries information, if not how else could i read your post?
>>
>>35068789
We're talking about the name of the term, not what it describes. c is the "speed of light" or the speed of light in a vacuum if you want to be pedantic.
>>
>>35068809
wrong, you have gravity too, conveyed by the neutrino
>>
>>35068789
Are you talking about how colors are absorbed producing changes in the perceived world, which we then interpret with our brains to make sense of things? Thats biology and computers my friend, it doesnt have very much to do with light.

That said its actually really interesting how our brain precieves the world and you should absolutely read more about it if it interests you! I dont know a ton about it but what i do know is really cool!
>>
>>35066691
what the fuck
>>
>>35066704
the sound has been encoded into electromagnetic signals, transmitted as a radio-wave, which is part of the spectrum of light
>>
>>35068833
I would change light to electromagnetic spectrum but more or less this.
>>
>>35068768
>In cosmology, the cosmological constant (usually denoted by the Greek capital letter lambda: Λ) is the value of the energy density of the vacuum of space

Hmmm
>>
>>35068781

Different anon. Light carries information about itself, spin and wavelength as examples. These things don't have to be created by living beings to be information, they just are.
>>
>>35068666
As you command,satan.
>>
>>35069021
Though doesnt something being information require its perception? I absolutely concede the point youre trying to make, however is it still information without anything to perceive it. Would it not just be its state of being?

I wish to include im in no way qualified to answer these questions, more basing it on my own understanding.
>>
>>35069259

Bud I hate to break it to you, but yea light carries a form of information. The photon is a Spin-1 Gauge Boson and just like any other field propagator can give you information about a system. There was that experiment a while back where entangled photons were "sent" to a satellite and the spin was determined. The simple fact that the photon isn't a scalar particle means I can get information from it.
>>
>>35068815
The neutrino isn't the gauge boson for the gravitational field. If anything it's one of the things farthest from that, seeing as how weakly it interacts with the gravitational field.
