Can someone describe the lethality of rifle rounds compared to pistol rounds in close quarters? Say, within the confines of a typical home?

I'm trying to decide what to reach for in case of home invasion.
>>
>>35063495
Rifle rounds will over penetrate, go through your wall, and kill your neighbor, pistol rounds won't.
>>
>>35063579
Except many times where the opposite is true
>>
>>35063495
Always go with the rifle.

More ammo, more power, easier to shoot accurately and fast at close range than with a pistol.

Shotgun is even better.
>>
>>35063595
The neighbor will go through my wall, over penetrate my pistol rounds and kill my rifle?
>>
>>35063579
Pretty much anything that is an effective weapon against human sized targets will still be dangerous after an arbitrary number of wood framed walls.

You own every bullet you fire and you'd do well to remember that before pulling the trigger.
>>
>>35063495
There is a video of a doctor giving a lecture about the difference between treating a rifle wound and a pistol wound. Go find it.
>>
>>35063621
I meant pistol rounds will overpenetrate while a fast rifle round (like 5.56) will frag and penetrate less. But your scenario sounds more interesting
>>
>>35063495
something like you have a 6/7 chance of surviving pistol wounds if you get to a hospital in time. meanwhile the people shot by longguns are dead. they dont reach the hospital.
>>
>>35063665
>Lessons learned:

>Contrary to what we have been told, XM-193 does not seem to “fragment” when shot into drywall walls. After we were through for the day, we even shot several more rounds of XM-193 into the walls to see if we could get one to fragment. They did not. It is clear that they were tumbling and deviating from the flight path, but they were still penetrating the walls. Now, before anyone says it, No, I do not know how much damage they would do to someone after the 4th wall. But they would do some damage as they were still penetrating.

>Remington 55 grain JSP and Frangible 5.56 also penetrated all 4 walls. So did the .30 Carbine. When shooting rifles, walls are concealment, not cover.

>00 Buck penetrates 4 walls with ease. It is a great “Stopping” round, but there is a price to pay. Until someone invents a “Phaser” like on Star Trek, anything that will stop a bad guy, will also penetrate several walls.

>Birdshot does not excessively penetrate drywall walls. But it does not penetrate deeply enough to reach a bad guy’s vital organs. Birdshot makes a nasty but shallow wound. It is not a good Stopper. Use Birdshot for little birds. Use 00 Buckshot for bad guys.
>>
>>35063733

>don't use a rifle it'll penetrate 4 walls
>00 buck will penetrate 4 walls

>use 00 buck for bad guys. wow nice

https://youtu.be/zaR1EVybUgc
>>
>>35063733
Only uneducated american retards would think drywall can stop 5,56.
>>
>>35063792
>he didn't specifically say to use 00 buck indoors
>>
>>35063812
>that's probably 60% of gun owners stateside, if not more
>>
>>35063833
>Next up - will 5,56 penetrate tinfoil hat? Will it penetrate THREE tinfoil hats?
>>
>>35063823
shotguns are only useful for birds and bottles

>>
>>35063579
I thought rifles were LESS likely to overpenetrate since the bullets tend to fragment upon contact with a barrier.

>>35063935
thats only true for 5.56
>>
>>35063495
Intermediate rounds, like in the AR-15, are pretty much ideal. They'll fragment on impact, unlike most pistol and shotgun rounds. If you have an AR-15, use that.
>>
>>35063875
Why would anyone use a pistol or pistol-caliber carbine for home defense instead of a basic bitch AR-15?
>>
>>35063495
.458 SOCOM JHP are the only answer.
>>
>using 5.56 unless it's from a 20" barrel and it's M193

>ever
>>
>>35063495

Pistols poke holes.
Rifles tear holes.

Best way to describe the difference I've ever heard
>>
>>35063935
Depends on the round. If you shoot someone with .50bmg, it's going to over penetrate like a motherfucker and then some.
>>
Double barrel loaded with slugs.
Point things with bead, shoot, what was covered by bead doesn't exist anymore

This is pure unsubstantiated fuddlore. Any typical 5.56/.223 load, out of any typical barrel, will zip through every goddamn wall in your house unless it hits something else first.

4x the energy of a 9mm, higher sectional density, and contrary to this rapidly spreading mythology, does not atomize when it touches drywall - which isn't shit as a barrier. Literally a half inch of compressed dust.

Semi-related, what rounds should i use in my ar15 for home defense? Been using xm193 since thats what i shoot at the range and i know its zeroed ok. Good enough or do i need some fancy shit?
>>
My dad owns an AR in addition to many other guns but those are locked away in a safe while he uses a Glock 19 for home defense.

I tried to explain why an AR with a 30 round magazine would give him a massive firepower advantage over any intruder armed with a pistol but his explanation is that "rifles are for long range"

JUST
>>
>>35065474
Ordinary 55gr FMJ is about as good as it gets.
>>
>>35065498
Are frangibles a meme or something to be taken seriously in the context the 5-30' envelope of expected home engagements?
>>
>>35063495
Interesting question. I keep only one gun out of the safe for home defense, my favorite, it has sentimental value (it was first real fun, been through some shit together, he's my battle buddy, feels like an extension of body). This gun is a longarm. A battle rifle with 25rd mags.

I know about overpenetration. I live in a rural area, closest neighbor is far enough away. And all intruder ingress points are in directions away from room so I don't have to worry about gf catching friendly fire through a wall.

I have 200gr in the magazine that's in the gun for more intruder stopping power. I feel like because this gun is so natural to me, that if some shit were to go down I would have a higher likelihood of being effective with it if I was panicking or wounded or dazed. I might fuck up with a pistol i barely shoot. I'll be so fucking deaf though
>>
>>35063970
>>35065547
Maybe my initial instinct to use my battle buddy 308 for HD isn't bad
>>
>>35063970
Jesus that 308 wound profile is horrendous
>>
>>35065847
I know right. And that's fmj. After seeing that i want to see what nosler partitions do. Nosler partition bullets are made so that the soft front partition squishes and flowers on impact while the the back partition keeps driving the round through. Its a great hunting round and I can see why.

>>
>>35065920
Did you even look at that chart? The other bullets that are compared to the nosler are all like 200+ gr special 308 cartridges. 200 grain is heavy as shit for 308. If you have a 1 in 10 twist in your barrel you're probably okay but a lot of 308 rifles have 1 in 12 and 200 grain would just keyhole and zing off into nowhere out of that barrel.

Excluding suicides, 9 times out of 10 people who were shot with handgun rounds who seek and recieve immediate medical attention survive, trama units in the US and abroad have become so advanced that treating GSW from common handgun calibers arent as bad as it was back in the day.

Wow, this nigga is an idiot.

I load mine with 62gr Gold Dot, I did a lot of research before choosing. Found a thread where people had been using it for deer hunting and it made some nasty wounds.

You are not restricted by the Hague convention, choose performance ammunition for defense.

What did he mean by this.

Hey arent there a bunch of people on youtube who test this? And those people found that 223/556 actually doesnt overpenetrate anyway?

But I mean hey, what good is physical video recorded and charted data when you're arguing with a bunch of euros at 4am on labor day in america, amirite?
>>
>>35065334
Yeah, you're literally wrong.

9mm penetrates more drywall/wood than 5.56 does. Fuck yourself.

Recoil mitigation which would mean easier use by the user.... less recoil, shorter rifle; easier to control and keep fighting.
I hope to god this wasnt a serious post though.

Is this what europeans actually believe?... That in america if someone is shot they wont be helped because they dont have money or insurance?
Jokes on you retard, they help them and then work out the debt later. Fuck sake.

>That in america if someone is shot they wont be helped
That would be too easy and eventually solve your problem, instead you have to pay through the ass for access to healthcare because of criminals and fatties getting all this free shit to keep them alive over and over again.

Who said burgers are shit? It's just a sad to see so much resources wasted on keeping people that don't deserve them alive.

How about a .223/5.56 varmint round? My understanding is that they're the most likely to frang on impact. Would end up having a shallower, but maybe wider, wound on a person, but would it be enough? Especially with a 30 round magazine?
>>
I heard a comedian say the following. I think it was Bill Burr, but i'm not sure.
He uses a .22lr revolver as a HD weapon. Because when he shot a .38 all he could hear was a EEEEEEEEEEEE.
So he basicly says that to keep situational awareness (which includes listening to your surroundings) he would rather have a smaller round.
Makes sense from that point of view. As long as you magdump into an intruder

Use whatever gun you do best with/ feel most comfortable with. Sure a rifle is more deadly than a pistol. But if you can operate like a motherfucker with that Glock 23 but cant hit the broad side of a nigger with your .308 meme rifle, guess what gun you should defend your livelihood with?
