Typically they're rust covered with minimal use, every single connection is loose, extractors in multiple pieces, actions stuck for no fucking reason, shells won't eject because of chamber rust/broken ejector. The list goes on.

ITT: Overblown memes

I bought a relatively new Remington, just didn't want the overpriced rusty ones from the pawn shop based on the principle that they ripping folks off. It does fine. My first gun was a CZ452 in 22 LR and I put a Mueller Optics high mag scope and it's the most accurate firearm I have so far. But you should know this: it depends on what you might want to do. I don't enjoy shooing my Remington 870. I bought it for hunting. I don't enjoy sighting it in with slugs. But you could shoot trap/skeet recreationally, it could serve for home defense, you could hunt birds. Turkey and deer season. But it might sting a little. Have you shot one? I could shoot my CZ452 all day (and I remember wishing I could) and then I can focus on a steady hold, smooth trigger pull, holding on target, breathing. If it's your first gun you might want one that you won't be distracted by the inevitable punch in the shoulder to build your skills.
