You're an officer of whatever at-war country during WWI, and you need to buy your own handgun for service. Because your commander's a lazy fuck, it can be any handgun from any country.

What does /k/ buy?

1911 or Browning High Power

Depends on what ammo I can get a hold of easiest in the country I am in.

for your amusement a reason US Military was chamber empty for normal carry

>> One aspect of the 1911/1911A1 differed from all other World War II handguns. That is they have three safeties. One is a half-cock notch for the hammer. The second is a thumb-operated one on the left side of the frame. The third is the grip safety; meaning the pistol cannot fire unless the shooter’s hand is around the grip depressing it. The latter one is a holdover from the horse soldier era, and its purpose was to keep cavalrymen from shooting themselves or their horses.

US military doctrine was that the 1911/1911A1 be carried normally with magazine inserted but with chamber empty. Decades ago an older shooting friend who had served as one of the last US horse soldiers in the early 1940s told me he witnessed at least two cavalry trainees accidentally shooting their horses in the head while doing mounted drills.

Sir,

I am writing you to correct a potential mis-apprehension that I perceive you have developed regarding the carriage of guns by those of the officer class.

It behooves a gentleman to bring one of his better shotguns, but not his best (of course) when he finds himself involved in fighting on the front lines.*

So while I find the choice of gun given rather base, I can certainly understand the desire to carry this arm. I have attached, by means of electronic computer, an image of a suitable gun for the young subaltern, to this posting.

Your Servant,

anon

My choice would entirely depend on the odds of me actually having to fire it at someone. If an NCO, lieutenant or captain I'd want something reliable with some punch and a decent magazine capacity that didn't make me look like try-too-hard. So, depending on what was available; A Colt 1903 or 1911, an FN Browning 1910, or maybe even a Langenhan. There were some interesting revolver choices but let's face it, reloading one while your hands are shaking and your head is numb is a bitch.

If I was anything above captain I'd go with something more in the way and size of a peashooter. It would just be in the way while sitting behind a desk or chumming in HQ. Maybe a Beretta?
