Saw this at a local pawn shop. It's a SA 85M AK and the guy was talking some good shit about it. Told him ive been looking for a WASR and he told me that this AK was "5 steps ahead of the WASR". I dont like the stock at all so that's going out (assuming I can replace it). It's priced at $800 but they have a 20% off used guns sale right now so it'll be $640 plus tax. He said this is a $1000 AK. Is this guy telling the truth and/or should I go for it?

It's a sporter Hungarian AK. There's no threaded muzzle or bayonet lug so if those are important to you you won't have them (honestly don't worry about it) and you'd need an adapter to use traditional AK stocks

$640 is a pretty good price for that ban era gun, sure a WASR is more of a "standard" AK but for the same price this is already available for you (not needing shipping and FFL fees) and Hungarian AKs are good. If I was after one I'd be 100% ok with buying that for $640

For what you're getting it's not functionally superior to a WASR it's just novel being made by FEG and will look gimped if you try to make it look like a regular AKM.

Chimps, how do you like your M1 Carbine? My grandparents have a neighbor who is willing to sell me his complete mix and match USGI M1 Carbine for $500, I've shot it with him quite a bit and it's never had too much problems outside of what you'd expect from an M1 Carbine. I'm thinking about dipping into my AUG fund for it, $500 is pretty cheap for one that I know works and it'll be a fun little plinker with Tulammo

I don't want to be a dick and buy it just to flip it because I know the guy, if it was a stranger that's different (not that I'd do it cuz that's illegal ya know)

Are you sure it's a mixmaster? Real USGI carbines are made from parts from all sorts of different manufacturers. As long as they're all USGI parts they usually work fine. $500 is more than good enough if for nothing other than the parts. I would check if the barrel is original and what the quality of the barrel is. Frankly I would go for it because they are super cool, handy guns and tulammo .30 is only a quarter a round. I would say 90% probably yes you should do it.

The stock is pretty dinged up and the gun is definitely well used, it's been this guys plinker for decades and treated as such. Looking it over a few days ago it's worn and the bore is pretty dark and worn but not pitted. It's by no means a collector's gun but just a plinker, granted I don't know much about M1 Carbines and what to look for to be sure it's all original but they're all USGI parts. He said he has replaced the springs a few years back but I don't know if he's done anything else. The guy isn't a collector and is pretty fuddy so he doesn't know specifics about it, just that he bought it for really cheap at a gun show in like the 80s or something

Most times end users like him won't go replacing parts because usually they don't shoot them enough to break anything. The question is whether or not the previous owners changed anything. But honestly it should be fine either way. I inherited my carbine from my grandfather, who inherited it from his father, who bought it off a state trooper, and it probably had different owners before the trooper but I don't know it's history beyond that, except that it's a WWII era carbine. I'm pretty sure the barrel is not original and neither is the rear sight. It was probably rearsenaled at some point. There is a dark pitted patch in the barrel. It rattles like a maraca. But it shoots very reliably and is as accurate as I need it to be.

I actually am not a fan of the AUG based on looks along, same thing with the Tavor. Bullpups do not do it for me. Also worst case you buy it for a great deal and end up not wanting to keep it. Nothing wrong with trading up or selling for something else.
