What are your thoughts on using powerful 1W+ laser pointers for self-defense?

I have one that is strong enough to light fires and looking into the beam is over 1000x worse on a W/m^2 basis than staring at the sun.

won't incapacitate a determined attacker fast enough to stop them from killing you. definitely won't kill them.

will cause permanent eye damage, which they will no doubt use to sue you for massive damage. might also damage your own vision from the diffuse reflections.

conclusion: unsuitable for self-defense purposes. use a firearm instead.
>>
>>35026816
I was thinking that the beam would instantly dazzle the attacker and ruin his night vision for long enough to let me get away.
>>
>>35026841
You can use a fleshlight (preferably mounted on a firearm) for that. When it's dark 300 lumens to the face will suffice

that assumes a best case scenario where the laser instantly and totally blinds the guy.

If you're not willing to kill someone then you're not in enough danger.
Why do you fuckheads keep trying to fuck with my other hobby?
Is it because the price of high powered lasers came way down and even mouth breathers like you can afford them now?

flashlight is better for that since it has a wide beam. You could use a beam expander but then the lux wouldn't be as high. Flashlights already have input power in the multi watt - two 3V batteries running like 1-2 amps.

Was in line at a DMV some dick head is shining. A laser on my head making people laugh. Turn around and the fucker scanner it across my eyes, I called him out, then called the cops on him, he tried to walk away fast out of the building but I met him in between the doors and punched him so hard in the fast I almost killed him . He ran away dripping blood. Now go play with your laser sonny.

>He thinks dispersion on a 1W laser is so great that it couldn't hit aircraft.
The optical range on a 1W laser is 56 miles.
Now let's say the refraction paper/lens you're using cuts that in half.
That's still 28 miles, not only that but you've now spread the beam across a much larger plane, no pun intended.
Do you even have laser safety eyewear?
I'll bet money you don't.
>>
>>35028312

yer jes too grenn tah handle them lazers sonny!!
>>
>>35026744
This guy made a 200 watt laser and it looks to take a second or two just to pop a balloon. I don't think they'd really be viable for any kind of self defense scenario except for causing the guy that just murdered you to be blind for the rest of his life.

I concur with this anon. Be humane and use a firearm.

Also you would open yourself up to legal trouble for maiming your attacker. Send your thanks to the dindu enablers.
>>
>>35026744
I think they're a nice, compact means of damaging an expensive fursuit or stupid hat or some idiot's sign from outside arm's reach, provided you can get one powerful enough. Not as good at dealing with someone determined to attack you.

Unfortunately they're banned in the US.

Specifically
>Exposure to a visible laser beam can be detected by a bright color flash of the emitted wavelength and an after-image of its complementary color (e.g., a green 532 nm laser light would produce a green flash followed by a red after-image). When the retina is affected, there may be difficulty in detecting blue or green colors secondary to cone damage, and pigmentation of the retina may be detected.

Now stop being a "I didn't know it was loaded" faggot and actually learn about the shit you're fucking with.

Wrong. Heavily regulated by the FDA, but far from banned.
It's retards like Wicked Lasers that got high powered pointers on their radar in the first place.
Meanwhile low key guys have been building and selling them for years.
>>

A- it comes with the laser
2- literally zero air traffic, middle of nowhere

Again gomer, good luck when you're blind.
>B-but it was just a few seconds of exposure.
At least all the weed you're smoking will help with the inevitable cataracts.
Do you shoot without hearing protection too?
>>
>>35028419
A - Have you ever checked your laser's actual power on a laser power meter; ie laserbee?
2 - Fair enough, but it's still risky with a refraction lens without being able to truly know where the beam/s are going to hit.
You're better off with a single beam in open space. Fuck around with the lenses in a forested area, where the canopy will catch it.
>>
>>35028426
Why bother? It does what I expected for a 1w.
There is plenty campfire smoke, the beams are all visible at night but yeah, under a 30ft pine canopy it catches the spread well.
>>
>>35028462
It's nice to know what the actual output is, is all.
Just be smart please. I know it's cool, but you're really playing with fire without using proper eyewear and such.

Can i use one against mosquitos?
>>
>>35028668
They're the agency that regulates lasers, as it's a radiation emitting device.

https://www.fda.gov/radiation-emittingproducts/radiationemittingproductsandprocedures/homebusinessandentertainment/laserproductsandinstruments/ucm116373.htm
>>
>>35028750
I gotta guess it'd royally fuck a mosquito.
>>
>>35028750
It would be very difficult. You'd have to construct a device to track the mosquito (which will require it to spin at about 600 rpm on two perpendicular axes) then calibrate hit it and only it. You need more power, too, about a megawatt (very short pulses). However, it can and has been done.

Which wavelength is most dangerous to the human eye?
>>
So I understand these things are crazy dangerous to eyes and forbidden in war for obvious reasons...
but could they be used in SHTF? Or by rogue "states" like ISIS who give zero fucks about stuff like that?
>>
>>35029236
This is one of the scenarios that is really not fun, If all the military aren't "looking into it" then I would be surprised .

What if a state or non state actor wanted to neutralize the air force of a given country ?

Would it be possible to utilized operatives to carry out a operation to blind some or potentially all pilots with a coordinated attack ?

If the pilots can't see they can't fly and then there is no air force.

What if a radical organization started a campaign to blind law enforcement or other critical personnel or even indiscriminately on the populace ?

If some individual were to do such a thing , the resulting publicity could inspire others to "copy cat" their actions , and then you have a truck attack type situation

I suppose the relative availability and sophistication involved would be a limiting factor but still ...
>>
>>35028651
No name, 3.7v 4000 amh (?), using 1 or both possible.
>>
>>35029177
>What wavelength is best for astrology also what carries furthest through the sky?

Typically, we use the bog standard green emitters for this purpose, they're highly visible among the black out sky of the new mexico desert, allowing basically everyone at the demo to find what we're pointing at.

>Which wavelength is most dangerous to the human eye?

Commercially available? Blu-Ray diodes are among the most dangerous due to output, and beam frequency. They're strong enough to etch metal, ignite flammables, etc. Without welding, or filter goggles, even the beam scatter (i.e. using it to 'light up a room, or just being in the room it's emitted into) in a standard room is enough to cause permanent vision loss
>>
>>35026744
At 40W+ you have a good chance of igniting the attacker's hair and clothing, which is likely to stop him attacking, but I wouldn't bet anything on a weaker laser.
>>
>>35026901
Great idea, distract them with the fleshlight, then shoot them in the balls when they climax!
>>
>>35028411
But Alabama man, what if I only use the evil witchcraft of the laser to blind brown skinned people while they drive and also for burning the image of our lord and savior Jesus Christ into the back of peoples shirts so they and others can be reminded of his presence? Then is it okay?
>>
>>35029880
Welding masks are NOT safe. Only glasses made to filter out the specific frequency of the laser is acceptable. We're talking light intensity a couple orders of magnitude worse than arc flash here.
>>
>>35029177
>Which wavelength is most dangerous to the human eye?
Near infrared. With visible wavelengths you at least have a small chance to blink.

Any laser that is powerful enough to hurt someone will blind you as well. I have a laser from China that is... well... less-than-legal here. It's powerful enough to slightly burn your skin, pop balloons, and see from 2 dozen miles away.

That laser is so bright that the operator of said laser will blink away spots on their eyes. Even if you shine it at a dull object, like a tree or something. One that is powerful enough to be used as a weapon is impractical for this reason.

I was dicking around with my 2w blue laser and i accidentally pointed it at a white lawn chair, one of those shitty glossy ones, about 2m away and the reflection temporarily blinded myself and a friend. ALWAYS wear eye protection when fucking around with that level of laser. If i were to shine my laser into someone's eye within 10m they would go blind, if not they would have serious eye damage.
