Is there ANY advantage to a saber-type weapon in a present or near-future setting?
Why are there always swords?

Swords are cool.
More to the point, the lightsaber could plausibly cut through anything given time to work. Considering how small the thing is in it's off state, I'd carry one around just for the utility. Cut open doors, cut through hull plate, cut open stubborn packaging, even make toast. No, I don't know if lightsabers can make toast but I'm willing to try.

Because she's cute.

I'm honestly a little triggered. I'd like you to delete that.

Saber is the cutest, outside of the new Rider everyone is talking about.
>>35004788
There is NOTHING cute about sabers. There's only death and destruction and SALT.

There will always be swords because hitting people with metal objects is fun.

You really need to delete your account already!

Someone ran the math on a lightsaber being hot enough to cut through things the way it does. It was hot enough that anything non-steel pretty much flashed over in a 30m radius when it would be turned on.
fuck lightsabers
when do we get shoulder mounted AT machineguns
>>35004788
>make a generic anime girl design
>say its a boy
>faggots flock to it
hate this meme
>>35006849
Hopefully by then California will have stopped outlawing the shoulder thing that goes up.
>>35006800
Well that's definitely hot enough to make toast.
Also boarderline bullshit due to arcwelders basically doing the same thing but not having the same effect.
>>35007038
>arcwelders cutting a 1-2 inch gap per few inches per second of few inch deep metal
not lying, what kinda arc welding do you do, it must be fucking radical
Don't make me post that SAO webm.

underrated

If you mean a fancy futuristic laser sword that's only a handle when it's not activated then absolutely, especially if it's capable of cutting through barriers.
>Why are there always swords?
Rule of cool.
>>35004545
Easier to carry at your side than a polearm and better than a knife. Kinda like how a handgun is easier to carry at your side than a rifle and better than a derringer
>>35009159
Derringers are handguns Anon.
>>35009183
Kinda like how an autoloader/revolver is easier to carry at your side than a rifle and better than a derringer
Is that better?
>>35009207
Yes.
>>35004788
>new Rider
I prefer the floor length hair Rider. She was pure sex.
>>35006800
I remember reading somewhere that lightsabers use a magnetic field to control & shape the plasma So maybe that'll hold the heat back.
