top-heavy things suck and the mag getting lopsided would probably impact user comfort a lot. also the sight picture looks really wonky

I gotta admit I love the design of the Uru, shit's clever/simple/weird as hell but its a favorite.

I like that french subgun with the tilted receiver. But if i was pressed to take a stamped, open bolt wartime submachine gun I would grab a PPSh

Definitely the KP/31. I build one after a friend build his PPSH.

The build is nearly identical but the stock on the KP/31 is much higher quality as are many of the parts.

Also why were side-loaded SMGs (and FG42) even a thing? I'm not hating on them, they're cool, but why? Wouldn't it be better to have the gun balanced (left-right) than to have a glorified sideways magazine grip? It's not like it's a matter of cost/build efficiency, you still need a spring to push the rounds out of the mag, and it's as simple as rotating the magwell 90 degrees back down, and making a tiny change to the positioning of some bolt parts. Also it's not very compact when the magazine is in, compared to a traditional magazine orientation.

It has some advantages when firing the weapon from the prone position. There was also the case of design considerations for reducing cost and having an overall simpler action. However, when the cost of manufacturing becomes less relevant you see the traditional arrangement win out.

Realize that a lot of guns from WW2 were pioneering at the time. The bad design features fell out of favor and led to what we have now.

just sayin, my idea was each mag, at the top of the thing had a portion of the bolt itself, lets say half. you stick it in, it locks into the bolt, you fire, and when you remove the mag you remove half the bolt.

Depends on my task. General urban fighting or trench sweeping? PPSH. Specific tasks like jumping with a parachute or crossing the frontlines in the night? PPS or MP40.
