What kind of wood are the stock Rock Island 1911 GI grips made of?

So my friend got a Yugo SKS and when we went to shoot it the bolt would barely go back far enough to pick up a round. This would often cause malfunctions- pic related. We also found out that the bolt would hold back when the trigger was held. Anyone ever heard of this kind of malfunctions??
>>
>>35002817
Clean the shit out of the gas block, seems like its not getting enough gas.

Also not really familiar with yugo sks but I think there is a gas cutoff when the grenade sight is raised. Could be causing problems (But I could be completely wrong about this)
>>
>>35002817
>malfunction
I'd bet my left nut the gas switch for the grenade launcher isn't fully in the off position. Did you check the gas switch?
>>
>>35000921
You can load glue sticks into .44 shells I believe, and then fire them from a revolver with only the primer, no powder.
>>
>>35002794
>considering trading a tikka for a remshit
Aaaand you just counted to potato. Even if that 1911 comes with an armory full of ammunition, it'll never be worth it because Remington is run by people that make the monkeys at Taurus look competent. Trade it straight up for a base model Dan Wesson instead, it'll be comparable in quality.
>>
>>35004040
This idiot never mentioned he's in fucking Alabama (I'm on the east coast) so I'm still stuck with my shitty lefty tikka, but just so you know I would have totally taken that offer

>I hate sporters
Your loss I guess, but the Savage 99 is one of the sleekest and nicest sporters of it's era.

Given it's condition and being chambered in common .308 Winchester, you could probably just sell it for a decent amount of cash and buy a 1911 that isn't trash. A Remington just is not worth a Savage 99.
>>
>>35004231
I have it listed for $600, including a Leupold vx2 3-9(x40 or x50?) which should be worth around $150-$250. Some jackass tried to tell me the gun was worth like $300. What's it really worth?

I've gotten very little interested people at this price, why do you think it's so valuable? Do I lower it?
>>
>>35004269
In good condition you could probably get $700 just for the rifle on average, then add the cost of the glass.

The .308 Winchester chambering probably wouldn't do much to increase price but it'd make it more attractive in general.
>>
>>35004314
I looked at Google images and the first three were $600-700 with glass included. Since I've had little luck I'm gonna keep it at its relatively low price and maybe take it down in a week or so. I guess having one single fudd gun wouldn't be all that bad
>>
>>35004106
Clear grips with a printed photo under
>>
>>35004213
Right. Go to as many gun shows as you can. Even though that Tikka is a left handed one, it's still a high-end model, and lefties WILL pay a premium for one that fits them. If you just want to do a trade for a 1911, shop around for Dan Wessons, pre-1980 Colts, Les Baer, and MAYBE a good Kimber if you can inspect it properly. That cousinfucker from Alabama was trying to screw you, and while it may be tempting to offload it onto someone else immediately for something that you want, don't sell it for a shit brand gun like Remington or Springfield. Don't bring it to a gun shop either, they'll screw you even harder.
>>
>>35000487
If a person could only afford to have either an AR-15 or an AKM in the $500-750 range, what would be their best option?

Assume the only other guns they have/will have for a while are a 9mm handgun, a .22lr bolt action rifle, a .270 bolt action rifle, a 12 gauge pump action shotgun, an 1851 black powder revolver, and a .410 break action shotgun.
>>
Whats a fair price for a new Mossberg 590A1 magpul edition?
>>
>>35004449
Due to how oversaturated the AR market currently is and how shit filled the AK market is I'd say get an AR, for $750 you can have a pretty nice Aero Precision upper and PSA lower with a good stock and grip
>good Aero upper $300
>PSA complete Magpul lower $150
>Back up sight $50
>Primary Arms Advanced Micro Dot and mount $200
>4 mags $50
>>
Is it bad to manipulate the controls on a pistol with your off hand? My strong hand thumb isn't long enough to reach the slide lock, decocker, or mag release on most pistols.
>>
>>35005354
Its smart honestly, it prevents you from having to adjust your grip, my hands can't hit the slide release on a 1911 for shit so I have to use my left hand

Is it just a regular r1 or is it an enhanced? Remington or Ruger 1911s are the best budget 1911s other than springfields, which are great if you can overlook the political shit. I got a remington r1 over an enhanced just because i like the simple design and the pretty walnut grips.

Is it very easy, getting an FFL with the intent to just do transfers for some side money? I was considering giving it a shot, since I've got a fairly rigorous course load for grad school which doesn't leave time for a real part-time job.

Is it enough of a headache that I'd be better off doing something else?

How do you get better at shooting pistols with small hands? For reference, my hands are smaller than men's small size gloves.

I can usually shoot revolvers fine, and some 1911s if they have skinny grips and short triggers, but pretty much anything else is an exercise in frustration. Even most subcompact guns are too big for me because they build them to fit in an average sized fist, so I can't get my fingers around the grip.
>>
>>35007161
Find a gun that fits, shoot that instead.
>>
>>35007163
So 1911s with skinny grips?
Also the Sig P938 fits my hand really well, and a Makarov I shot a while back wasn't bad.

I'd be fine with carrying a P938 or Makarov, but I don't want to shoot snappy little bastards like that all day at the range.
>>
>>35007199
find cooler ammo, shoot that instead.

What's the most versatile powder for reloading?

Reloading newbie here. I want to reload everything from 9mm and .38 to .223 to .30-06, but I don't want to have 50 different types of powder sitting around. I'm reloading exclusively for price. I realize I might need one handgun powder and one rifle powder but that's it.

>>
Why are charging handles on the right side? Serious question.
>>
>>35007583
Holy shit, I'm not the only one who hates this!

The best explanation I've heard is that with big, front-heavy guns, it's easier to support the weight of the gun from the foregrip while you work the handle with your right hand, instead of holding it all back at the grip and letting go with your left, but it's never been a problem for me. I prefer charging handles on the left.
>>
>>35006396
9/10 times the gun is more accurate than you. Take into account barrel condition, throat erosion, etc.

For instance, mine was a "new" receiver back in the 1960s but the barrel is 20+ years older. It passed all the inspections and shoots like a champ, but you always want to verify with how old these guns can be.

What model of 1903 were you looking at?

I suggest you take some duct tape and cover the entire back of the targets with a few layers. I'm on my 2nd one. First one lasted a couple of weeks before a big chunk of plastic broke out of the backing. Taped it up, and it lasted quite a while until the sticky stuff was so beat up that I decided to replace it. Taped the new one up before using it the first time, and it has been gtg for some months now.

I've got a cheap Leupold (rifleman, maybe. 3-9x50 bought it at wal mart for around $300) and I've probably put 500 rounds through my .300 WBY. No problem whatsoever. Plus I'm pretty sure Leupold has a lifetime warranty.
I love shooting my weatherby at the range because people come walking over to me to find out "what that canon is".

Also, if you're going to shoot it much you might as well get into reloading. It's the reason I got into reloading and now I reload 8 different calibers.

Remington isn't worth your time, you'll have to do a lot of rebuilding and parts replacement to make it not shit.

Ruger American is pretty solid, if the plastic stock bothers you there are aftermarket wood ones, Ruger also brought their M77 back, even in .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum, though you'll have to check if they still make them in .30-06

Other options are Savage and Sako.

Firearm newfag (newfagish anyways, I own a few but I'm far from an expert) here. If I go into a shop and see a 1917 Winchester 1897 going for $269, what's the catch? Handled it, everything locked up really solid, the action was as smooth as silk, there's a little bit of rusting on the magazine tube and a little pitting in the barrel but otherwise it looks fine. The magazine tube is a little loose and rotates some, like maybe 3-5 degrees either direction. The numbers on everything match (although like a fucking dumbass I didn't write it down). What reason should I be looking for that they are selling this gun for $269? Couldn't it be much higher?

Is it taboo to message a seller on gunbroker and make an offer on a gun that is still up for auction? It has no bids and ends in 5 days. Meaning that I just pay them today and he ends the bidding. I hate gunbroker btw.
>>

This looks like a yugo refurb from J&G. They were given all new parts in bosnia so the springs and tolerances are very tough and need to be broken in. Also clean cosmoline.

I can buy a sporterized Arisaka rechambered in 30-06 for one hunnit dollas. Do I do it? Even though it has no historical value anymore, is a good condition 30-06 bolt gun worth a franklin?
>>
>>35012131
There's nothing wrong about messaging. If they're a store, you can just call the store or go in person to get a gun; they might accept an offer before or even after the auction ends if they get no bids.

It seems like private sellers put things up on gunbroker because they want a "sure thing". I've messaged a guy before about a rifle that he's relisted multiple times for the same price, offering to meet him in person to buy it in cash. His response was "we can meet if you win it", which is another way of saying he doesn't want to put in the effort because he knows his pictures aren't representative of his rifle.

It's not bad form to message, just mention that you'd be willing to make an offer if the auction ends with no bids. The whole point of a bidding platform is to drive demand, and if there's no demand, it's easier to convince the seller to sell outside of the platform entirely.
>>
>>35012277
Well, even if it has no historical value, if the gun is professionally converted to .30-06 and *isn't* some horrible bubba-shit like a conversion sleeve JB-welded into an original bore, a rifle is a rifle.

Does it look clean and tasteful?
>>
In Florida can you make your own "silencer" for an airgun or is it an NFA item?
>>
>>35012790
Airgun silencers are a shaky subject Federally, I would seriously write the ATF a letter on the subject.

Optionally what you can do, is to get a .22 caliber air rifle and a .22 caliber silencer, the silencer being usable for both a rimfire rifle and an airgun.

Looks pretty clean, headspace is correct. He said he couldn't sell it to gunstores because it didn't have a serial #, but there was an original jap serial right on the receiver. Any other reason why a gunstore might not take it, other than it not being worth enough to sell?

It was very, very common for 7.7 Arisakas to be rechambered for 30-06. The two rounds are 'close enough' so that it wasn't much work to just ream a bit of material and there you go. Accuracy may or may not suck however as the .30-06 uses a .308 bullet while 7.7 Jap resulted in a .311 barrel. Sometimes it works with that individual rifle, sometimes you end up with a 10 MOA rifle.

Arisakas were so commonly rechambered as a matter of fact that it's usually recommended to do a chamber cast to be sure if it's still 7.7 or if it was turned into something else and never marked.

I bought a slightly bubba'd yet very salvageable Lee-Enfield for 200 bucks (synthetic stock and a bit of rust in the rear sight).

From what I can make out it's a No1 Mk4. Anyone know if the wooden furniture of a No4 will fit it or just of a No1 Mk3?

If it's a true No1Mk4 then SMLE furniture should fit with a few modifications. Would be worth it to talk to some of the other owners and get copies mad of their furniture.

I guess my real question is, why are we still there? Presidents have all gone in with solid arguments about why we need to get out, and then changed their minds without any satisfactory explanation. What are we doing there that justifies the cost?

Do people believe that us being there is preventing more attacks like 9/11? If so, why? It doesn't seem like anything we're doing over there has anything to do with their ability to perform attacks like that--they could do it even if we took over and stabilized all of Afghanistan and pushed them all into hiding in caves in Pakistan.

And if not, what is the real reason?

I think so. I paid $169 for a sporterized one last year with the stock all chopped to hell but it does have a completely intact mum so I bought it for the novelty of its mum being intact despite it being bubba'd. Since it's already been ruined many decades ago I use it as my fun rifle by customizing it and scoped it. It's actually a very accurate rifle.
>>

Went back and looked at the other pic. Faint mark beside the V would probably be an I making it a Mk6, new picture confirms it.
They were the trials rifle that became the No.4MkI and modified No4 wood should fit. There are a few collectors that made new Mk6 wood as well. Most Mk6s were converted to No4 rifles so given the rarity and value the proper wood should be used.

Might as well ask, any idea what these markings mean? There's a few more, including a crown at the end of the barrel.
>>
>>35014326
Interesting. I was also looking into what it would take to convert brass for handloading. Looks like people take 30-06 brass and use the 7.7 dies to reshape it and trim it for loading. My one concern is that the casings expand in weird ways when they're fired. Would it be safe to reload them more than once?
>>
>>35014418
Honestly I would just leave it as 7.7. It's $26 for a box of 20. Making it .30-06 means permanently reaming the chamber and adjusting where the barrel sits which is a pain in the ass. I mean how much are you really going to shoot it that the price is too ridiculous? That's not even more than what 80% of brick and mortar stores try to charge at retail for .30-06 and .308 hunting loads.
>>
>>35014416
Proof marks and inspectors cartouches.
The end of the barrel is a proof mark with .303 2.22" for the standard .303" british cartridge and 18 tons per square inch.

$600 is a bit high, but you're talking a $300 pistol and a $200 carbine kit that commands a higher premium than the gun itself. Honestly I'd rather off the goy 250-300 for the kit and buy a neos locally

>>
>>35014459
Right, yea. The more I think about it the more I'm feeling like leaving it in 7.7. I've got a bullet press, so I looked at what you can do to get 7.7 and it looks like there's a method to make 30-06 brass into 7.7 - so I can use the spent brass from my other guns to make ammo for the 7.7 if it's a pain to get my hands on in store. I worry a bit about having difficulty getting my hands on the more exotic ammunitions in the future. Just curious about whether or not a converted casing like that would be reloadable or if it's a one and done deal because it expands differently than a regular 7.7 casing

what is the most AESTHETIC gun to own that shoots well
>>

Luger P08 pistol in good condition.

If you want to cut on price, get a mixed parts refurbished gun with properly replaced and tuned springs, and some high quality MecGar magazines.
It should run like a top.

Just bought a new chink m14 clone. Do I have to strip it all down and remove all the oil like I would with a milsurp?

Go for a holosun 515 instead.

But this guy hit the nail on the head
>>

>m14 clone
If the "oil" is cosmoline then yes you will need to strip it and clean it off. You will know if it is cosmoline because it will look like cosmoline, if its just new gun oil then dont worry about cleaning it off, makes sure the barrel is dry though.
>>
>>35018891
Couldn't hurt, give it a new coating of some good CLP like Ballistol.
>>
whats a caliber that can effectively kill a deer at 600+ yards? Am I looking at 7mm size rounds?
>>
>>35018912

Sorry for the obvious newfag question, but cosmoline is thick, brownish and waxy correct? This just has a thin film of transparent oil.
>>
>>35019045
>>35018917

Also are there any parts I should avoid applying oil to for any reason?
>>
>>35019045
Thats just new gun oil then, just shoot it until its dirty and reapply whatever oil floats your boat.
>>
>>35019057
The feedlips on the magazines, those should stay dry. Otherwise you could put a little bit of lube/oil on the follower itself.

Overall, make sure the gun isn't dripping with lube or oil, wipe off excess, just a light film of it should be right.
>>
>>35019057
Inside the barrel, the bolt face (the part where the firing pin hits the primer at), inside the gas system.

keep those areas dry and you'll be fine.

Last question about the M14. I took it apart and when I put it back together I noticed the op rod and gas piston don't sit flush with each other, pic related. I'm pretty sure I put it together correctly and nothing I do seems to make it line up. Should I worry about this?

A PDW is typically in an intermediate caliber (5.56, 5.45) and an SMG is typically in a handgun caliber (9x19, 45 ACP).

The only exception being Carcano ammo as the Pisans said Pasta La Vista to QC for their rifle bores (they vary wildly).

Don't listen to that other guy, PDWs were specifically designed with special calibers. They are necked down pistol rounds like 5.7mm or 4.6mm which are designed to provide penetration of body armor in a SMG sized weapon.

The original concept for them was to be issued to soldiers like tankers who were being given SMGs at the time. The idea was that body armor would become more widespread in future wars and SMGs wouldn't cut it, so PDWs were pushed.

The concept died for widespread use when people just figured out you can issue ultra short carbines in a service caliber and get better performance. PDWs still exist as more of a niche thing like a sidearm for JSOC pilots where the compact size actually matters compared to a carbine.

Ruger 10/22 with tech sights and a GI sling. Alternatively CZ 452/455, Ruger American Rimfire, or some sort of rimfire rifle. Learning the basics of firearms marksmanship may seem boring but it'll pay off eventually. I can't tell you how many people I know whose first gun was a full powered rifle, milsurp, or shotgun and they lacked basic marksmanship training or developed a flinch.

Some shit works really well like using a crayon (or something) to fill it in, set it with heat, and then to seal it with clear coat nail polish. Alternatives include paint pens, paint, and powder filler (all sealed in with some clear sealant).

You do you, bro.

>>35020833
How you grip and manipulate could be an issue, as well as who made the slide and how the serrations are made.

Or you could have baby soft hands.
>>
I recently got a model 70 and I need a way to mount my 3-9x40 optic. I have a Leupold STD base and I was probably going to get the STD rings to go with it. Which height should I be looking at? I want the scope to be sitting as low as possible, but I don't want it to interfere with the bolt. Will the low rings work, or will I need to go with the medium height rings?
>>
>>35021149
I'm thinking it's that I have soft babby hands, it's a Glock 19 with work done by Lone Wolf that my competition shooter friend gave to me. I took a couple of training courses and notice when doing speed drills my hands get sliced sometimes by the serrations even though they aren't super aggressive.
>>
>>35008597
I think it would depend on how much it'd cost to have the work done. You could probably get a decent 1-4 scope for not much and use it on 1x all the time (unless it's just scopes in general that make you queasy, and not the magnification).

2 and 3/4 specifies the length of the shell 2.75 inches is the standard shell length your gun should have a marking specifying maximum shell length somewhere

7 and 1/2 specifies the shot size in your case 7.5 being a general purpose bird/ clay target shooting birdshot

Ok, just got my first pistol and recently learned about the double feed malfunction.

If the round that is stuck in the chamber didn't fire, is it possible for the next round to hit the primer and set it off? Would you need extra pointy bullets to make this happen?

It works fine. I don't reuse them indefinitely since .30-06 brass is cheap but you can also anneal the neck to increase the case life.

Also recommend slugging the bore to check if it's closer to .311 or .312. 175gr projectile and 42.5grs IMR4895 is the recipe I've been using with good results.

First time gun buyer here. My CZ just arrived at my FFL and I ended up getting hit with a NICS delay. Is there any specific reason for this, or is it just government bureaucracy doing what it does best? Also is there any way to speed things up, or do I just have to wait a week until the delay drops off?
>>
>>35022327
Well especially when it's a drawing it's harder. The artist probably saw that gun last and drew it from memory you know?

The process you'd have to go through to try to speed it up would take far longer then the delay itself.
