Lets talk about the Coast Guard. How competent are they compared to the other services?
What is life like aboard a cutter?
Are their operators as high speed as the other services?

Anything about the Coast Guard. Dumping with pics.

Good guys. Very professional and competent within their mission set. I worked with some in Tampa. Super user friendly. As a private boater I am glad to have them. Chris Costa is a walking meme with ZERO combat experience. Pick related.

Well, I'm pretty sure my mental health history would disqualify me. I've seen a therapist for the past 5 years and earlier this year I was voluntarily committed to a mental hospital. To be honest, I don't really know if I'm really that fucked up in the head or if I just think too much and have nothing going on in my life. I feel like the structure of the military would be good for me but unfortunately it doesn't seem like an option now.

I feel your pain anon. I got diagnosed with anxiety about two months ago. It sucks. I had to cut out all caffeine as it make everything 1000x worse. Had to go into the ER for their mental program they offer last night because I had been consuming a drink containing caffeine (arizona teas) for like five days not knowing they did. Today I just feel drained, everything is running slow for me. Worst of all, I can't take meds to help as they make me sicker than a dog. Trust me though anon, you can beat this. You are strong enough to know you need and seek help instead of doing anything brash. You got this.

They actually aren't allowed to ask for any medical history as all (by medical forms and records I mean). They will ask you specifically if u have ever been depressed, seen a therapist, did drugs, have been hospitalized ever, and a bunch of minor diseases and disabilities stuff; but they aren't allowed to actually check to see if you lied or not.

I wouldn't take it lightly to lie though and u need faith in yourself not to let any past problems resurface once inside. But really you probably still could get through.

I was in a similar spot, I was a massive drug addict through college b4 failing out and my parents had hospitalized a bunch and made me see therapists/psychiatrists and stuff because they though every accidental slight od was a suicide attempt. But I'm now through MEPS and shipping to boot camp soon.

I also am in good shape tho and still fairly young (21), if you aren't I would advise doing it b4 bootcamp so u don't feel depressed there. U have to be able to 29 push-ups in 60 sec, 38 sit ups in 60 sec, and run 1.5 miles in 12:51.

Idk if its for you and I would put some serious thought into it prior but I think you can still realistically make it work.

Anyone in coast guard currently or served prior that could help me out.

I'm joining in Nov. and after boot camp in Mid January I will be going straight to "A School". I was wondering what rank I would be after A School, because every e1 gets e2 after boot. And usually people don't get A School for 2 years but they graduate it as e4 (petty officer 3rd class). I was just wondering if I am finishing boot and A School with only around 8 months what rank will I be. It's somewhere between e2-e4 but I have no idea really and my recruiter is dumb as shit and I can't find much online.
>>
>>34992197
Don't they have to raid ships boarded by pirates, send terrorists away and stuff?
>>
>>34992216
What rate did you get?
I'm an ME I was E4 after A school and I went right after basic.
>>
>>34992261
I'm an ET and did pretty well on my ASVAB, I was only thinking it would be less than e4 because my recruiter said he could make me an instant e4 after A School if I signed for 6 years (which I declined). So I thought it would be lower but maybe he was just trying to fuck me over and take a bonus for getting me to sign for 6 years.

So as an ME after 2 months of basic you got right to school and got e4? How much TOS did u have after graduating school, and did u sign for 6 years or nah.
>>
>>34992351
I signed for 7 years. Reservist.

Meh, most area are just patrolling lakes trying to help stupid drunk people that don't know how to ride a boat in the first place. Also they have to make Russians and Chinese ships move over when they try fishing something in international waters after exhausting their own supply. Yeah it's mostly just kind of fiddling around doing jack shit, they help with natural disaster relief on coasts as well. But they still do more than most other branches when we aren't in wartime, I mean marines just take up space on navy ships eating their crayons and polishing their civilian helmets when they aren't stopping sailers from using the gym.
>>
>>34993482
I have a second cousin who just got through and I talk to him a bunch so I think I already got most of it down. I don't mind being yelled at, I'm well above the physical requirements so I think PT stuff will be alright, and I'm already studying the helmsman a bit.

Also my cousin got his lucky ass stationed in Miami with $1400 BAS/BAH.

>>
>>34990947
They took the Harpoon racks off not too long after they were installed. It was a proof of concept sort of thing. Other than that, the post-FRAM 378s would mostly fill the LCS role perfectly. Upgrades to the sensor suite, of course, and maybe put a grid of VLS cells where the torpedo mag used to be.
>>
>>34992197
Different mission parameters. Think LE instead of search and destroy. It's about bringing suspects back alive to stand trial.
>>
>>34989681
>US mainland
>naval invasion
Literally impossible at this point. USN's strength and size aside, the US would always know who, what and where and would be able to effectively prepare a counter with plenty of time because of the distances.
>>
>>34990931
different anon here, I've got issues with my legs and feet. I can kinda function perfectly normal and have great leg strength, but I have severely limited stamina and flexibility because of the tendons in my legs and flat feet. it really sucks because I come from a military family and I'm the only one that hasn't and won't be able to serve.
>>
>>34992216
Depends how in-demand your rating is, and how well you do in school. Passing the school curriculuum is equivalent to passing the end of course tests for E-4. You'll also need to have a minimum amount of mandatory time in service/time in grade. Worse case, you'll come out of school as a rated E-3 waiting on the next advancement cycle to put on your Third Class crows. Best case, you'll place well enough in your class and meet the time requirements for Third upon graduation.

The higher you place in your A school class, the better your chances of getting crows upon graduation. Class standing also determines unit selection- higher scores get to pick sooner. Unit selection will be restricted to those units which have or soon will have an open billet for a Third Class in your rating. You'll fill a Third Class billet right out of school.

Some of what I said may be outdated, but the broad strokes outline should be accurate. Your recruiter could tell you all of this, he's just being lazy. His focus is on getting qualified bodies to meet his quota. Once you signed your life away, he lost all interest in you.

You'll be at Petaluma for a while. Bring your car, if you have one. Otherwise you'll be stuck at the TRACEN. Having wheels gets you instant friends amongst the other students. Pro tip- there will be female students there. A car will get you laid. DO IT OFF BASE.

Watch your finances, that area is expensive as fuck. For the short term, put half of each paycheck into savings. Be wise with the other half. While you're there, bug the Educational Services Officer. Find out how much college credit your course work is worth, and how to document/claim those credits. Once you get to your first unit, keep bugging the ESO. CLEP as many credits as possible. Those tests are free while you're on active duty. With a little luck and self discipline, you can come out at the end of 4 years with a BA or BS and a fat bank account. And that's even before you touch the GI Bill benefits that you're going to sign up for in boot camp.
>>
>>34996368
I snuck in with scoliosis man, I could like through MEPS and hide it. Long as you think u can crush bootcamp.
>>
>>34996580
I went ET think it's pretty high demand, it's the job with the highest ASVAB requirements for coasties and it had a $10,000 signing bonus. I'm pretty sure signing bonus means undermanned.

I think I'll do pretty well in school as well, I'm really motivated because I have fucked up my civilian life a lot. Also for TOS and TOR it's 6 months between e2 and e3 (which would be most of my school as an e2) I guess I just don't get how or what the exception would be to differentiate. Is it purely based on how well you did in school? Or do I have to brown nose some higher up for him to try to get me to make rank?
>>
>>34996720
Yeah I'm hoping to make e5 in my 4 years, which I think is easily doable. I'll have a bunch saved and get a small place and enroll in school year round to get my e5 BAH for 3 years while going through college. Also I'll probably go to a yellow ribbon school rather than state.

They seem to be able to cope with the civilian freighter threat better than the Navy does.
>>
>>34998147
No, I'm talking about people in need.

For example that poor asshole with an appendix that was about to explode in his abdomen on a freight ship 16 hours off Boston.

Or the crude oil vessel with the broken rudder, that would fucking sink if the coasties wouldnt help.

Yeah, the CG may not blast sandniggers but they sure dont have to brush rocks during peacetime.
>>
>>34998110
>Is it purely based on how well you did in school?

Almost entirely academic standing. There's a requirement for CO's recommendation, that gets rubber stamped as long as you stay out of trouble and aren't chronically late to class. In this context, trouble means anything involving alcohol or fraternization. Provided you're of age, you can drink in moderation, if you get the hots for a fellow student get a motel room on the weekends. Don't get a DUI, that gets you booted.

Returning to the topic, how well you do academically determines your standing in the class. When you graduate, the Guard will have a requirement for X number of ET3s. Example: they might need 30 ET3s and your class standing is 23 out of 40. You'll graduate as a Third, and you'll get the 23rd pick of available units. Last 10 guys in your class grad as SNETs, and get whatever units are left. Those last 10 guys will make Third at the next advancement cycle, in 6 months.

OTOH, if there's 25 guys in your class and the Guard needs 30, everybody grads as ET3. And there will be signing bonuses. DO NOT FLUNK OUT OF SCHOOL. YOU WILL OWE THE BONUS BACK. You'll also go to the fleet as a nonrated E3. That doesn't stop you from putting in for another school or striking, it's just more time spent as a nonrate.

If you do find yourself failing, despite your best efforts, there's a couple of Hail Marys you can try; see if they'll let you cross deck to SS school, which is also at Petaluma. Cooks are chronically in short supply, you might even get to keep the ET signing bonus. Other options are YN and SK schools, both also located at Petaluma. Probably no bonuses for those, but it'll get you rated so you can pay the bonus clawback faster.
