Could the United States had conquered the world in the 1860s if they weren't fighting over negros? Would have prevented two world wars, the cold war, and communism.

>Would have prevented two world wars, the cold war, and communism.

No nation on this earth can contain the Germans' desire to ruin everything they touch.

They were using blimps as observation platforms with morse-code. Vicksburg was trench warfare. Even German train timetable warfare had its infancy in Union tactics.

The U.S. was so far ahead of the times its ridiculous.

no. Europe is too big. we didn't have the man power to do it. However we could have totally ruled the seas. We were also the first to have a successful submarine and reliable repeating arms.

Americans did have the best navy in the world by the 1890s.

we probably could have forced the world into paying us protection money to roam the oceans.

Both Britain and France had full size ocean going iron clads while the US only had river boats

If it hadn't been for the civil war you would have just fallen further behind

According to Ken Burn's Civil War this isn't true. The words used the second the Marimac fired on the Monitor every navy on Earth was obsolete. Just the source I heard.

Not even the Roman Empire could've conquered the world, they tried and collapsed due to stretching themselves too thin from the inevitable infighting that occurs. America however could've easily taken over Mexico back then, but no President in their sane mind would do such insanity.
>>
>>34986882
That's preposterous, and so's the idea that the US navy was even in the top 2 until after Germany was defeated in WWI.

"The combination of Yankee artillery with Rebel infantry would make an army that could be beaten by no one." - A CS officer

This wasn't untrue. Cavalry in the USA and CSA was also second to none, although the Prussians mistakenly believed otherwise.

The quote about every other navy being obsolete was more about the future direction of naval warfare being clear, not that either ship was actually that awesome on it's own.
Monitor(s) might be the more famous as the first purpose built steam warships but they were kinda shit ships that couldn't handle rough seas well. They showed the concept of the future but trying to use them as some anons itt are suggesting to project power across the atlantic wouldn't have worked out well at all. If anything they were almost as obsolete as they made the rest of the worlds navies, because almost always as soon as you demonstrate that something revolutionary works everyone else will immediately look at it and make improvements over your design, which is exactly what happened with warships into the steam era.

>The words used the second the Marimac fired on the Monitor every navy on Earth was obsolete.

Correct

Those navies being obsolete meant all of the ships inside them were obsolete.

Wrong

The UK had two of the pic in service and it could of taking either the Monitor or Marimac hands down. Thing is that the HMS warrior costed a lot more then either of those two. The American design was quickly copied by the Russians, Italians, and Austrian. The French already had their own ironclad designs and stepped up their game in reaction.

>>
>>34990386
More like you should innovate, then continue to refine the initial innovation as well as trying to find new ideas ahead of anyone else.

The early USN failed to do so meaning that whilst the Monitor type represented an initial revolution in warship design they, and the USN in general were soon left behind as the early US chose to largely ignore the navy in peace time leaving no money to continue developing/building a modern force whilst the other major powers in the world were investing heavily in modernising their fleets, taking the Monitor as their starting point then finding ways to improve on it.

>Thinking the War of 1812 was also Britain's 'most powerful point'

C'mon, I know American education sucks, but it can't be that bad.

Not to mention, that all those sailors getting press-ganged by the British, ended up just dying instead. Since the British Navy went from stopping 1000 ships a year while trying to embargo France, to just simply sinking the fuck out of them. By the end of the war of 1812 US trade was in shambles, and a local shipping merchant of my city made himself so rich converting his fleet into privateers that he built a huge fucking university and named it after himself.

If the war had ended on the peninsula in 1862 I would agree with you. Union leadership was dogshit until Grant and he wasn't even that good. He just wasn't a complete retard and/or a pussy.

CSA has good leadership but they only held out for 5 years because of Union incompetence.

>started rolling out Ironclads when the entire global population was using wood
nope

USN had a handful of barely seaworthy turret on a raft type monitors decent enough for fighting the south as they allowed the US to control rivers but they werent well suited for naval power projection

Royal navy had purpose ocean going iron built and armored warships since the 1860s, HMS Warrior wasnt well suited to riverine warfare in the same way the monitors were but by the same token the monitors couldnt handle ocean conditions well and would get badly beaten by Warrior if they could make it out to the blue water.

first ocean going turret ships worthy of the name were british, and britain had the edge in naval terms until the 20th century.
>>
>>34988625
Karl Marx was a Jew.
Not a German ok
>>
>>34986882
not exactly true, the duel proved what many naval architiects and admirals had already concluded, that iron built steam powered ships were the future.

but several navies, notably the british and french had already reached the same conclusion several years earlier and had already started transitioning.

it was in fact far less of a revolution than the launching of HMS dreadnought, because the change was already happening the battle merely emphasising contemporary thought regarding the future of naval warfare
