The choke at the end of the barrel is rifled.

This is actually a pretty ingenious solution.A barrel doesn't need to be rifled along it's entire length to stabilize a bullet. As long as you use an appropriate twist rate for what type of bullet you're shooting, a couple of inches of rifling will stabilize it just fine. Having the barrel be smoothbore right up until the end probably helps with velocity of the bullet since it isn't being crushed down and forced to spin until it's already at speed. I imagine the rifling in the choke wears out relatively quickly, but since it's a choke you can just replace it.

I mean, it's still bullshit that they have to go through all this, but this is a great way around it.

Semiautomatic shotguns are limited to a 24 inch barrel and 40 inch overall length so that puts most of what you'd want from this out of reach right from the start.

You also don't have to wait five years for an FAC. If you have a valid reason, there's no waiting period to apply (just for processing).
