I know this isn't technically a question about armor, but

I know this isn't technically a question about armor, but are there any engineers here who have thought about designing a new combat helmet designed to disperse explosive or concussive forces?

I mean, Level 3A helmets can deflect bullets, but are they capable of absorbing explosive shock?

There's a huge amount of TBI, and I was wondering if it was possible to create such a helmet.

It's possible but have fun lugging around at least 20 lbs of bullshit on your head.

I was under the impression they were protective against concussive force before they got thick enough to be ballistic

It'd have to be something integrated with a body armour.

No point in having the head be protected if your body is ripped to shreds.

You can armor up, but you wouldn't be very mobile. At that point you're already a target and should consider getting some sort of armored vehicle instead.

You know, I was reading about a concussion proof or concussion resistant helmet that the NFL was producing- but I don't know if that would be applicable to combat situations.
>>
Can they design a helmet to take the blast? Probably. But your beck wouldn't be able to take it
>>
Blast pressure is usually not a primary concern, seeing if you are close enough to get caught by it, you are most certainly shredded by the fragmentation cloud. EOD suits offer protection from it, and as far as I know there really is no option that wouldnt be bulky as hell

Theres low cut helmets that SF use that will stop a 7.62, the bigger problem is that stopping a 7.62 with your head will probably break your neck. Helmets are more to protect from shrapnel, fragmentation and concussion (i.e bumping your noggin)
>>
Funny thing, I saw a project by some highschool students to create a football helmet that used layers of special padding to reduce the shock of an impact of 75g to 25g. However, I don't know if that would be at all applicable to an explosive shock wave.
