History Channel is doing another history-themed show like they did with Vikings. This time about the Templar Knights!

a history-themed show, on the History Channel, you say?
>>
Calling all armor anons, how historically accurate is this? It's set in 1306 just before the templars were disbanded but they're wearing more than just great helms and chainmail here.
>>
>>34967171
It looks cool
considering today's political climate, it might not have been the best time to release it. I an see both sides frothing at the mouth about it and never shutting up

>what you have here is the holy grail
>it's basically why you exist, but you look here closely
>see this stamp?
>means it's only part of the set
>it's only a small part of the value because the set is what collectors are after
>i'll give you 2 skins of wine and this enchanted topaz

I'm just in it for the templar porn. They spent quite a lot on the equipment budget here.
>>
>>
>>34967171
It looks pretty neat, it's nice to at least see historical depictions of killing Saracens, if not in real life.
>>
>>34967253
I think it'll be more about europeans turning on each other, this is towards the end of the knights templars when the french king destroyed them

>show about templars
>not about crusades
>about some random knights autistic obsession with the holy grail
Why even?

heres a better pitch.
>show about teutonic order
>season about fighting rus varangian guard and getting rekt
>season about fighting golden horde horse archers and getting rekt
>season about fighting Polish Winged hussars and getting rekt
Itd be a sadder show more than anything. The Order and the characters failures will set them up for the next season.

What episode does glorious Saladin come in and fuck them up?

Because they don't want to show the truth about how Christians were scumbags and killed:
Non-Christians
Other Christians
Women, Children
Spread Christianity "by the sword"
etc

This happened more than 100 years after Saladin died. By this time the christians were already kicked out of the middle east.

They're going to be killing other Christians faggot.

Well the spaulders are a "they may have had them/ may have not" thing. The great helm is still being worn in the period but mostly they used the upgraded version wich is the sugarloaf helm with a rounded top instead of flat one. Maille was still very prevalent and was used untill full plate exploded all over ereyones faces like bucake (they still had maille underneath the plate though). Alot of stuff with armor in the mid-late 13th to early 14th century was beginning to enter the expirimental stage where the metallurgy was getting a bit better to understand but not to the point of tempered steel armor, and you had people doing this and that with what they could work with. Over all... maybe? Any anons feel free to correct me on the wrongs.
Also. I don't see a Gambeson or and Aketon underneath, but if he does and I just don't see it, he has his sleeves open and not closed off with a strap to keep swords/spears out of his sleeves to not have his arm getting cut up.
>>
>>34968220
why are two imps fighting?
>>
>>34968220
The 14th century is where we see the transitional (ie the most aesthetic) era of armor come in
Brigandines and Bascinets
>>
>>34968220
Did Templars even have pauldrons? I thought they didn't come about until plate armor
>>
>>34967171
>>34967189

>history show about the templars
>already horribly fuck up the costume design for the templars by adding hugely anachronistic accessories
>>
>>34969711
the plate shoulders they might have had weren't much like pauldrons. they were basically plate rectangles tied to the chain at the upper arm
>>
>>34969711
this scene still makes me mad after all this time
>>
>>34968220

The spaulders, rerebraces, couters and vambraces shown are all extremely out of date, with the armor pieces in question looking distinctly of the 14th century, along with the armor for the horses.

Pic related is a good idea of what kind of kit a crusading knight of this era might have

>>
>>34969711
In the 1300s: pauldrons, no. Spaulders, though, yes. In that time period, you people people starting to make primitive plate armors for the limbs, while still wearing surcoat and mail on the torso.

in the 1190s when kingdom of heaven happened? No. The sugarloaf helms in that scene are anachronistic too.
Kingdom of heaven is full of historical errors...and not just related to "half the plot didnt happen" stuff. Details, like godfrey using 15th century longsword guards with a 12th century arming sword....horrible movie.
>>
>>34967785
>>34969824
not just that but it was a massive waste of time
Reconquista is fine but why bother going to the desert
only long term effect was to give the muzzles a common and vulnerable enemy
>>
>>34967171
In b4 main character is a black/mixed race guy who identifies as a woman.
>>
>>34967171
Wow, somehow armies always pour gallons of Naptha around Medieval Battlefields to create dramatic fwooms.
My only other problems is, why every templars put those fuckugly metal buckets with holes in it on their head? Give em' Greathelms they deserve for god sakes, the ones with crucific brass noseguard and eyeslit, with more pointed "sugarloaf" style peak that can deflect top attacks better (and looks much more DEUS VULT worthy).

Is the "holy grail" a cup, like in Indiana Jones? Or Jesus' descendant like in an illuminati movie?

no just a shit load of gold buried under where king Solomon's temple used to be
and some artefacts that prolly ended up in the Vatican

they cause a fuss
and its not the first or last time

all of them
the word powers were very carefully balanced and interconnected
but like a house of cards it only took one to fail

>not that them pesky Bavarians did not make the situation worse
they are always lurking
Vienna too has a hidden influence

People were fairly obsessed with relics at the time, usually saint's knucklebones and bits of crucifixion nails and stuff. They drove hundreds of thousands of people on pilgrimages during the Crusade years. The Grail was considered to be the most sought after relic, and maybe more miraculous than the others, but it wasn't the cup of alka-seltzer like in Indiana Jones.

Anon is right, the Vatican did acquire thousands of relics over the years, but they've been more cautious about displaying them for fear of Germans ruining their doors again.

The tone of all these historical series' is killing me. Everything has to be this dour, anxious pattern of shouting men and dramatic music and people discussing a conspiracy in hushed tones in close-ups so the audience can't see how cheap the set looks.

Just once I'd like one of these shows to make a point of showing day to day life of a merchant or a peasant. I want to see some guy threshing grain for a minute or two and bitching about the church tithes or something. But most of all I'd like the tone to be a little quieter and more melancholic, instead of bombastic.

This. I want a glimpse of medieval life from the perspective of the common man, not only the politically and martialy powerful.

The closest we got was Pillars of the Earth, but that shit was made for a nickel and a promise, and cut out most of the interesting architecture stuff in favor of the drama and romance.
