You're not going to be able to make plate slots inside of that leather. The slots would be too small. You're better off just making segmentata/scalemail plates that goes over everything, making the leather redundant.

You could always just make plate armor and garnish/nail some leather on top of each plate for aesthetics.

But if you're really content with making a plate filled suit go for the segmented heavy cloth gambeson concept of that OP pic except with larger slots. It will look weird.
