> The release on appeal of an SAS soldier detained for keeping a pistol from Iraq has thrown a spotlight on war trophies. Are victory souvenirs now a thing of the past?

> The case of Sgt Danny Nightingale, who was sentenced to 18 months' military detention for keeping a 9mm Glock pistol he says was given as a present in Iraq, highlights a different concern - weapons as war trophies.

> He was later released by the Court of Appeal but the case echoes that of a grandmother from Dundee who was jailed for five years for keeping a World War II pistol belonging to her late father. She was also later freed on appeal.

Not really though
> In recent years, a handful of troops have been prosecuted for possessing war trophies, such as antiques and weapons.

> The case against San Juan began on June 25, 2006, when his fiance went to a gun range to learn how to shoot his .45 caliber handgun. A gun range safety officer attempted to show her how to use it but she struggled with the gun's slide and safety. When asked if she had access to another weapon that might be easier to use, she allegedly said she had “AKs in her garage,” the indictment said.

> The gun range safety officer then contacted law enforcement officials, who subsequently searched the garage and found the rifle stored in a plastic bin. It was later turned over to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for testing.

That's why there is a market for guys making legal replicas of Iraqi AKs and Tabuks

That range officer is a cunt
>>
>>34959390
yeah no kidding, I get that this was during the evil salt weapons ban but there's nothing implicitly illegal or suspicious about owning multiple AK pattern firearms when those were common on the market at the time. doesn't necessarily mean they were smuggled in or full auto.

He probably would have taken a finger as a trophy but the person using the Glock didn't have any left.

You can't take weapons or ordinance. It's not call of duty or Skyrim, no one can loot dead bodies. I know a guy who has a golden toilet handle tho. He was my senior, guy who trained me.

>During deployment in Iraq (Operation Steel Curtain) if you want to look it up
>Raiding Saddams palace
>Clearing rooms
>Enter bathroom, no shit Saddam really had golden toilets
>Palace is cleared, the last second he walks up and Yanks the toilet handle off, pockets it
>No one says shit, no one thinks twice

I thought he was full of shit until he showed me the thing. That's how a US Marine has a toilet handle made of solid gold from Saddam.

No the two anons fighting but i think there was a miscommunication somewhere..

The point is that weapons as war trophies are much rarer and it is much harder to bring them home; ie., my grandpa had a Nazi Luger, swastika and all, that he brought back. Such a trophy would be extremely hard to bring back now.

But, they DO exist still. My EOD friend has an RPG copper cone and a mortar base plate, but to get them required a lot of paperwork.

So the arguement of the thread is that for most of history, it was essentially a free for all, but the last ~20 years or so has seen a drastic decrease in the practice due to searches and stuff. Hence why you see Nazi lugers and Vietnam-stamped SKS rifles on occassion, but it's extremely rare to see an Iraqi Republican Guard AK or whatever.

We got permission to bring small shit back like mags, racks, baynets, etc...They didn't let us know until the end of my tour so I ran around my Outpost and rummaged through all the truck until I found some stuff. Has I know at the beginning of the tour I would have saved enough to open a small surplus shop or arm a small company ha. This was Iraq btw. Would have really been nice to bring at least an Enfield or pistol back. They wouldn't even let our company make an nickel AK we found non functional and bring back as a plaque
>>
Part of the military adopting corporate culture and sucking ass up to the people at the top. Who are probably anti-gun or think that vets will kill themselves with the weapons they bring home from their tours abroad. Their justification is that if you are looting the enemy dead, you are stealing resources that belong to that country even though those enemy combatants are not an actual entity of that country's military. Doesn't make sense since they crush all the weapons recoovered into scrap steel anyway. Let the boys bring home a makarov or enfield. If it's legal to buy back home, it should be legal to bring back home.

Finding out you couldn't bring loot home was a reason I opted not to enlist.

Among other, bigger reasons like not dying in a shithole sandbox so some corporation could make bucks, but a reason nonetheless.

Cousin told me on his plane back from Iraq he sat next to a guy who was carrying a pair of ears he had kept from a dead hadji wrapped in a napkin.
>>

Well I'd imagine that their ak's are mass produced just to have faster arms on the battlefield, so they just don't worry about it when the soldiers are already dying in the name of Allah.
