If that's all you guys can scrape together as a group the one who uses it isn't going to get the training and practice to be really good. You guys are following the first rule (which gets you at least 50%) "have a gun". So get multiple guns instead.

Different 5.56 bullets perform differently in different barrels. Heavier bullets perform better in 1:7 twist versus lighter bullets performing better in 1:9 barrels.

Twist rate affects what bullet weight the barrel will stabilize. 1:7 is for heavy military bullets but as long as you don't get anything too light it won't overstabilize. 1:8 and 1:9 are generally decent for anything you can actually buy, but its less common. Keep in mind that a heavier bullet is generally also a longer one and a longer one yaws more and is therefore more effective for the purpose of this thread.

Does it affect performance a noticeable amount within 200yds? I saw a chart somewhere that said 55gr, which seems like a good plinking round, doesn't work very well out of 1:7, but I don't want to cut myself off from heavier rounds.

Why don't you just buy shotguns instead? That way everybody in your family has a gun.

55gr should work just fine out of a 1:7 barrel. Even still, it's not like it'll be a huge noticeable thing when you're talking about self defense ranges. The difference between barrels comes into play when you're dealing with marksmanship ranges(300 meters or more).

tl;dr for just home and personal defense, barrel twist doesn't mean shit but if you want a rifle that can reach out and touch at a distance, 1:7 for light bullets, 1:9 for heavy bullets.
