honestly going back then for a decent set-up for home defense a a long bow, a sword, shield, and axe. would be the best set up. to have.

as i understand most bowmen carried axes with them in case the enemy got close or for utility.

But if you are unskilled like a filthy commoner , you would want a polearm. Simple, easy, and gives you distance.
