Did the Warsaw Pact ever have a chance at beating NATO and conquering Western Europe?

Up until about 1978, absolutely.

This. There were some periods before were there was some conventional parity but during the 70's the American military kinda went to shit due to all the fallout from Vietnam. Then the 80's happened and we started pouring a shitton of money into defense spending, meanwhile the PACT countries began to decay. Of course if war had broken out nukes probably would've been launched almost immediately.

Nukes ensured that this conflict could never happen, any full scale conflict meant everyone dead and no winner. So any discussion here is purely theoretical and is mostly intellectual masturbation.

That say, soviet land forces in Europe were pretty impressive - mostly armor forces - So I believe that they would have had a fairly good shot at pushing NATO back and reaching the Atlantic.
This would only be a battle though, and wars are not won with battles only. They are won with economical power and by whom is able to churn out the most weapons in the shortest timespan. For that reason, PACT would not have stood a chance against NATO after 1980.

We have this thread every fucking week and the answer is always the same.
No.

Only the Russian SFSR itself ever had any ability to stand against western powers and on its own would have been wrecked by sheer numerical mismatch. The miscellaneous Warsaw Pact satellite states had no coherence in their armies at all and were barely able to conduct drills let alone live maneuvers. Other of all of them only the Poles and Czechs had any real military competence and coherence and would have been racing each other to be the first one to turn on Moscow.

>>34942461

>>34938518
The Soviets took control of the Egyptian air arm, got thoroughly destroyed in air combat with their own pilots, and quietly fucked off.
>>
>>34938427
I thought the GDR had a really effective military relative to most of the pact, along with a special relationship with the USSR military, as they'd get the latest military innovations and upgrades before anyone else?
>>
>>34942468
You're talking about Germany. In a shooting war, they would have gone far enough to reach NATO bases in West Germany, parked their vehicles, and turned them over for evaluation. They had nothing to gain from a Soviet victory and everything to gain from reuniting with the west, and were glad to do so when it eventually happened. There were only two differences between them and Poland. One, how close they were to Russia, and two, how much they wanted to get revenge on Russia.

Have you seen the Polish Minister of Defense? His face is locked perpetually in an expression that says "give me one fucking excuse."
>>
>>34942476
That was in the early 60's though. I'm not trying to be a debbie downer here, I'm just trying to take a realistic approach to this. The Soviets had much better planes by the time the 80's rolled around.
>>34942505
Something like that. Not the absolute newest stuff (their T-72s were all early or export models), but they had a very disciplined military and a strong security apparatus. They and the USSR would probably have fought the hardest.

I like the 80's. You get new truly cutting edge technologies, and with older style uniforms.
My least favorite is probably early cold war. In my mind going against T-54s in M26s, M46 and M47's sounds like a fool's gambit.

That's.... unrealistic at best. Depends on the era, depends on the man.

Met several DDR vets that were adamant that they would have "wrecked" the Western Germans, as they were proper soldiers in a militarized society. Drinking the Kool-Aid, maybe, but who knows.

>>34942536
How is this the case? I would have thought East Germans would join their West German family as soon as they got the chance or vice versa and attempt a position of neutrality instead of killing each other. I don't know I just find it strange the country that is forcibly split apart would have strong loyalties to either side, especially more than other slav nations under soviet control.

hey its roger posting from my asus (model name unknown) featuring Intel Inside Quadcore i7 multiple core processing and sonic master stero speakers

first of all this is a great question and very insightful and i am happy because i havent seen smoething so careful and specific on here in a long time. careful and specific is practically my middle name, at least according to your mom, based on how i direct her to perform rim jobs.

so anyway military technology is hard to pin down but let's look at what you've got

>nucular missiles

the reason this was an edge for the soviets before 1980 was because they had less of them which but told us they had more, so we were scared and just destoryed them, because gerald ford can't sit down on a handciapped toilet without literally demolishing the building its in

after 1980 they actually had more which caused gorbochov's head to get this really weird scab and the soviety union immediately colapsed. rasputin may have been involved

>military

the US only had a paltry 3.5 million in the 60s and early 70's while the soviets had 5 million men and because the soviets are known for taking numbers advantages and defeating finland and japan they would have surely won this

>navy

the US was fooled into building 11 carriers in the 60s while the soviets were smartly developing one carrier that could smoke so much it fell off radar/looked like an armada, plus they figured out how to make torpedos with peroxide that go so fast they blow up immediately . advantage soviets

>air power

honestly the us couldnt even build a plan with counter-contra-rotating rotators, its not even worth talking about. i don't know this but im pretty sure the f4 lost every battle it ever fought due to not having a gun

>so as you can see

clearly soviets were better before 1980 because they succered the US into having better technology and more of it which forced them to have "brain drain" caused by "group think," and the vietnam war was lost

The Ossies were raised to believe that they were the "real" Germany and that one day they would reunite with the west under the banner of Socialism. They saw themselves as the successor of Prussia and saw the western side as puppets and the inheritors of Nazi Germany.

No u you stupid fuck. It depends on what you mean by mass retaliation. If you mean every square inch nuked then no of course not. But priority target retaliation was the staple of MAD and if you actually believe it wasn't you should get off /pol/. It was the entire reason why the Able Archer 83 incident occured.
But hey, don't let history and facts hold you back from your retarded world views.

Okay fuckheads, here's how it goes: WP crash the Fulda Gap, NATO forces open up with fucking everything in their arsenals, rendering most of central Europe a Fallout-grade wasteland with long-term radiological and chemical contamination. Things then proceed into a brutal, ugly defensive war with insurgent groups (see Operation Gladio) harassing the WP forces in captured territories, primarily focused on disrupting their big advantage in Europe: logistics. Expect everything from shootouts to use of nuclear demolition munitions. Within several days to weeks, Uncle Sam's big green dick arrives in the form of REFORGER, landing a fresh wave of US forces with armour and tactical/theatre nuclear support, who then start pushing back to at least retake Germany, leaving the WP with a couple options: go full strategic nuclear exchange, fall back to their borders and hope NATO doesn't pursue, or employ scorched earth tactics across Europe. None of those options result in any gain for the Pact, hence why this war never happened.

soviet invasion plans never included more then a 7 mergaton response and that was defunct as a response by 79. The US MAD response was an all is lost call. Read a book idiot. middleschool level history has not served you well

IIRC all NATO plans called for slash and burn with nukes as they retreated further into western europe and the Red army arguably could've been able to roll with that.

The border between Norway as USSR up north was one of the most active NATO zones, creating a choke point, they'd probably be forced to do a sea based attack with the airliner masquerade.

The Yak-38 did see some limited combat (twelve sorties as far as I know) in the Soviet-Afghan War during Operation Rhombus in April-May 1980, for the purpose of seeing how it performed in battlefield conditions. The then-experimental Su-25 was also being tested during this same operation. The Yak-38 did have some flaws; its engines didn't perform well in high temperatures, the heat from the liftjets quickly damaged takeoff surfaces during VTOL, dust kicked up by the liftjets tended to clog intakes, and it couldn't carry much of a payload for an attacker; only about 1300 kg.

An improved variant, the Yak-38M, was introduced in June of 1985. It featured a new Tumansky R28V-300 turbojet engine replacing the original's R27V-300, stronger liftjets (two Rybinsk RD-38 turbojets replacing the two RD36-35FV turbojets in the original). Both could each produce about 10% more thrust than their predecessors. Other improvements were widened air inlets, strengthened landing gear with a steerable nosewheel, and reinforced underwing pylons (four in total) increased the maximum payload to about 2000 kg. Various other improvements to general ruggedness and reliability were also made, though reliability remained rather poor. An extreme example of this were the liftjets, with a service life of about 22 hours. When the Kiev went on its first cruise in the Mediterranean in 1976, it carried six Yak-38s. Only three were working at the outset of the cruise, and only one was flying at the end.

Its performance was, to put it bluntly, quite shitty. Its operational radius was only about 100 km, in large part due to excessive fuel consumption in vertical flight. During cruises in tropical waters and hot weather, endurance was no more than about 15 minutes at best. Though to be fair, it WAS effectively an operational demonstrator machine that had been hastily pressed into service for political reasons. The Yak-38 was withdrawn from service following a crash in June, 1991.
