Why don't American cops train to use/carry scimitars or other medium-length bladed weapons, /k/? When I was in Oman, security personnel often carried these types of swords. They provide a close-range lethal force option in situations where stray rounds or noise are undesirable.
A baton is good for subduing, a sword is good for cutting off thief hands. Each has their place in their respective lands.

Because that would be way too cool.

because batons work pretty well against anyone who either is unarmed or has a less-lethal melee weapon. If they have a lethal melee weapon, bullets do just nicely, while keeping the policeman safer.

too many cops would trip and kill themselves with it.
Also, they would butcher nogs in the same way the tonfa was banned from police use because they actually used them.

Because getting in a situation where a sword is necessary is a sign that you've completely fucked up.
Not to mention their carry piece does the job of a sword much better.

Those disarming pitchforks they use in Asian countries are cool.
A fucking sword? Cops cant even strike with maglites anymore.
Some police used to carry hangers back in the day which are basically cutlasses. In a modern context, it's almost useless to carry swords.
