Okay, two problems. First, .45 ammo and guns that use it tend to be more expensive than, say, 9mm. Second, if you don't have a lot of money to throw around, don't get a 1911. The cheapest, bargain bin ones are going to run you $400 or so and they aren't that great. You would be better off getting a Springfield XD or a Ruger American at that rate.

Yes, of course you can find exceptions. That's not the point; the comment was about trends, not rules. The point is that there is a wider variety of firearms available within OP's price range in 9mm than in .45 ACP.

OP didn't outright say it, but given his odd suggestions (a 1911, really?), we could infer that he wants a .45. If that inference is correct, and he only wants .45s, then we are severely limited in what we can suggest for him. Pointing out the limitations with .45 platforms on a tight budget is meant to get him thinking about other options.

I disagree with those saying to just get the hi point. It is a functional gun that will fill your need, but at least wait and save a little bit. Try to derive as much quality as you can in this purchase, because it sounds like you won't be buying real nice guns for a while.

That doesn't really help my man. You need to be intimately familiar with YOUR gun, and with using it, if you're going to rely on it to protect your life. A few snap caps will help practice drawing and point shooting and reloading, but you really need to be completely comfortable with actually firing the gun.

Do you feel like your life or property are in immediate danger? Or are you just living in a really shitty area? If the former, get a gun, get some snap caps, practice your draw at least 10 times a day (bare minimum) and try hard as hell to get some extra rounds for practice. If you just want an HD gun, there are plenty of shotguns that are dirt cheap and will kill someone.

If you just live in a shitty area and are generally uncomfortable, then start amping up your awareness right now. Don't walk to your door looking at your phone, lock your care and keep it empty, park underneath a streetlight, make sure no one is lurking around and keep your door locked at all times, I don't care if you're just running to get something out of the car (which you shouldn't be, don't leave shit in your car) Never carry shit in that takes two hands anytime other than in broad daylight. Get to know your neighbors, and know what's happening in the neighborhood.

I actually have a Hi-Point. Bought it cheap for shits n giggles.

It's really not bad once you get used to it but it does take a couple hundred rounds to do that.
I strongly advise the C9 or even the .40 because of cheaper ammunition. While somewhat more powerful, .45 ACP is quite expensive if you're on a budget. 9mm Luger is $10 per box of 50 all day everyday.

I'd get the gun, a small lock box with cable, about 200 rounds of 9mm FMJ, at least one spare magazine, hearing/eye protection if you have none and if you can afford it at least one small box of quality self defense JHP ammunition.
