When it's 1999 and you get all your ideas for what would be cool military gear and weapons from James Cameron's Aliens, completely ignoring the fact that their equipment and lead from the computer screen tactics got most of them killed.
>>
>>34926050
Isn't theirs a bolt action grenade launcher? Neat idea actually.
>>
>>34926006
It may yet be viable with CTSAS.
>>
>>34926066
So youre saying that their weapons were sound?
Thats the point of this thread
There was a gun like this in the James Bond game Nightfire
It was pretty fun to switch to the grenade launcher and kill people from across the map
Underslung grenade launchers are still better
>>
>>34926006
I'm an American in 2017 and think that too.

Not for much longer
>>
>>34926006
Air-burst grenade launchers were a neat caveat. Not sure what it would've taken to work out all the kinks though.

Except that's not happening and the 7.62 rifles being procured will be an HK417 variant.

What a world. World War 3 is going to be fucking bonkers if that kicks off, nukes or no.

DARPA are next-level geniuses but making the OICW not a standalone weapon was a fatal flaw.

Grenadiers used to be a thing. They could have been brought back.
>>
Nigga that gun was hilarious in Socom 2
>>
It'd work if the burgers weren't obsessed with the launcher being semiautomatic. Both the worst koreans and chinese realized how stupid that was very quickly and opted for manual action launchers, shaving a significant amount of weight and bulk.

With the XM25 being so well recieved i wouldnt speak too soon anon. If i remember a report about them, the military said that it was ending entire firefights in one shot.

>engage
>take cover
>get lased
>airburst 40mm flies right above your head
>BOOM

that's the sorta thing that keeps infantry up all night. In the 21st century, your enemy having even a rough idea of your position will be a lethal hazard, and they wont need mortars or air power to deliver precision ordnance to your foxhole.

Loved that thing in SOF double helix. It was only made a bit awkward because the kb doesn't quite translate to having a few controls and buttons on the piece.
>>
>>34933408
aww yeah. Just the fear of the air around you exploding should be a healthy deterrent. and the weapon can only be produced by modern countries with solid technological advancements. It could put us ahead of everyone else for the next few years.

Those will get downed by EWAR and lasers and stuff I bet.

Im thinking of Humvee-launched SDB IIs with gliding/loiter, essentially a floating air-strike on-demand for ground forces.

As an aside would a 25mm semi auto GL like the XM25 work too? More ammo, lighter, less radius so you could use it in more urban areas. Idk much about Soviet 28mm experiments or anything, but it seems to address a few issues the XM25 had (too bulky, not much ammo)
>>
>>34933646
For now. It WAS an experiment. Now they know it's fairly sound, even if its a bit early. I wouldnt be surprised if the air-burst laser grenade isnt resurrected in a few years, even if its a modified PIKE for a modded M203
>>
>>34933661
>Those will get downed by EWAR and lasers and stuff I bet.
>sandnigers have EWAR and lasers
BTW if you try to engage platoon protected by lasers with XM-25 you would be blind and fried even faster.
>>
>>34933646
The XM25 is illegal thing comes from the 1868 "Declaration Renouncing the Use, in Time of War, of Explosive Projectiles under 400 Grams of Weight", which is something the US hasn't followed for many decades. That H&K even brought it up suggests they probably just wanted to renegotiate for further funds..
>>
>>34927171
Yes please
>>
>>34933701
Im not thinking ISIS, im thinking Near Peer, long term. Fair point about the lasers and eyes though.

But H&K is not US company.

I think it is liberals in charge there ascended on next level of insanity and they would not go back.

>>
>>34934228
About a grand. Pretty steep compared to 40mm, but a javelin missile without launcher is 70K. Supposedly they're handmade at this point, so if they ever reached serialized production the cost per round would go down.

Yeah, I'll pass.
>>
>>34934248
Because an airburst 40mm grenade is better.
>>
>>34934519
Yep. SAGM and Pike.

All of the goodness of precision munitions none of the bullshit (especially for sagm)
>>
>>34934519
Because it is not.

a low velocity 40mm will never be able to accurately deliver a payload through a window at 200m. Especially not if it has to be launched in a high ballistic arc.

Only a high velocity grenade with flat trajectory could.
>>
>>34934381
Not even. 20mm.
>>
>>34934554
>a low velocity 40mm will never be able to accurately deliver a payload through a window at 200m.
Any Grenadier worth his salt could, but 200m is about as far as you get for point targets.
>>
>>34934554
Perhaps if your basis is untrained conscripts.
>>
>>34934564
could YOU survive a 20mm grenade?
>>
>>34934670
You or I would not survive a well placed 22, does not mean I would pick the 22 over a 308 if I had a choice.

Army deemed the 20mm insufficient and moved to 25mm for the XM25.
>inb4 butbutbut muh electronics
>>
>>34934670
Maybe I couldn't, but the guy next to me might. Thats why the XM25 was made in 25mm, since its 20mm predecessor was deemed simply too anemic to reliably clear positions, even in semi auto.

Optic detecting lidar.
https://www.wired.com/2007/04/darpa_countersn/

>If that's the case why not just, you know, shoot them.
Laser hits at the speed of light, instantaneously and with absolute accuracy in practical terms. Plus "Infinte" ammo.
>>
>>34935126
>vehicle sized radar that might detect an optic

The vehicle will be killed by other assets. That's only useful for COIN.

Bullets hit practically just as fast and with as much accuracy.
>>
>>34934248
single shot bolt action is retarded. It's way larger than necessary. Either give it a magazine or shrink it to M203 size.
>>
>>34926006
Some faggot American "entrepreneur" almost landed them sweet corpobux from Uncle Sam. Cohen, now there's a crafty one
>>
>>34935126
kinda neat, they're supersizing those shitty camera finders. Maybe computer vision / processing will find the reflection better than eyeballs.
>>
>>34934228
I would regard the ability to authoritatively end a firefight with fewer rounds shot and fewer minutes of fighting as worth it, especially if they can eventually do bulk orders.

besides, we drop hellfires and mortars, this isnt really a major cost.
>>
>>34933408
Imagine if the chinese retrofit their QZL87 grenade launchers with XM25 style warheads.
>>34933377
You have a very lovely raifu, and the repeating digits to demonstrate your love.
