Is there any specific reason why cartridges werent made as square prisms? As in the cartridge is square then necks down a diameter to hold the bullet. Think along the lines of the caseless designs. Just curios really

Cylinders are better for high pressure systems like a firearm. Although you could probably combat it with a strong chamber.
Square cartridges would also allow more magazine capacity because there's less wasted space.

Would there be more or less issues with feeding systems with square cartridges?

assuming a feed ramp is designed for square cartridges I think it could end up fine with feeding.

Thats a sick ass design why does no one do this

Good question, I'm not really sure.
As long as your extractor claws had a good grip on the cartridge I doubt it would be a problem but then again square edges on the cartridge could get snagged,

I reccon this anon is onto something. I decent feed ramp would probably solve cycling issues.

Corners concentrate pressure. A cylinder has no corners.
