I bought my first ar 15 the other day I'm just waiting for it to come in. I own several other guns just never an ar till now.
I'm wondering what type of optic i should get for it?
I was gonna buy a red dot but I'm thinking i could get a decent ar scope for it and now i can't decide.
What would /k/ suggest for a first ar optic?

Was gonna buy the vortex strikefire 2, then possibly a magnifier later on

Well, what kind of AR did you get? If you bought a 20" HBAR with an A2 stock it is going to be silly to put a red dot on it. Similarly if you bought a 16" carbine with a carbine gas system with a FSB you are going to get some stares with a 4-16x50 scope. More info needed!
