How bad of an idea for SHTF is a little short PDW/SBR? My buddy brought a build in progress out today, and it really made me want something similar.
I'd say it's an excellent choice if you live in the city. Most self-defense engagements in the city happen in close range, so an SBR can really shine.

Should I concern myself with a suppressor? People tell me to go .300 Blackout and a suppressor for such a build, but I already have a few guns in 5.56 and a ton of ammo.

If you're getting tax stamps anyway might as well.

For SHTF you want more common calibers so keeping a 22 and 5.56 rifle around is a good idea.

I have an AR "pistol" ready for that exact reason.
Im actually thinking opposite of you OP, I want a longer barrel for recon purposes, since ive gotten into long range precision shooting and find ranging with a mil dot scope very useful. Im thinking of bumping up to an 18inch lightweight fluted match barrel to keep the weight down, along with a 1-10x or 2-15x scope.
Just wait until you see my little abomination. An ar 'pistol with a foregrip' and possibly a masterkey later on. Just go around all the laws senpai. Still waiting on parts.
